'It's just a nightmare': Connors Toy Library at risk of closure within next 12
months
Funding is needed in order to keep a phenomenal community charity afloat after
its National Lottery funding has ended.
Latest
Sophie Lewis
Tuesday 11 June @ 14:34

Connors Toy Library, which was established in 1973, has been supporting families
in the Portsmouth area for over 50 years - but the team has been faced with a
dreadful financial situation. The charity was initially funded by the Lord Mayor
Dennis Connors Fund and over the last 12 years, it has been supported by the
National Lottery Community Fund and community grants - but the funding has now
come to an end and the charity is being kept open by spending its reserves.

The charity offers families the opportunity to borrow toys, attend play groups
and receive support from other parents and specialists. With the charity having
to dip into its reserve funding, it has announced that it will only be able to
remain open until next March if they do not receive any additional financial
help. Last year, the charity ran 397 Toy Library sessions with 1249 families
(1307 adults and 1554 children) attending, with 73 per cent borrowing toys and
resources for ongoing play and development at home.

Connors Toy Library is at risk of closure after losing its national lottery
funding.

The charity also works with children who have special education needs and, last
year, 788 children with additional needs benefitted from attending a session or
borrowing toys and resources.

Karen Drayton, manager at Connors Toy Library, said: “It’s just a nightmare - We
have had 12 years of lottery funding so we are extremely thankful for that but
that came to an end in March.

“We have managed to keep hold of our reserves so we have been using that for now
- but when we get to the end of March next year we will just have to shut so we
are really trying to get funding.

“We are an independent charity and we are always looking for any funding we can
get - it would be really good if local people and businesses can help us.

“A lot of people have said ‘this is my lifeline’.

Connors Toy Library is at risk of closure following the lack of funding.

“It has never been about making money, it has always been about giving back to
the community.”

People in the community have significantly accessed the charity’s resources over
the past year with 181 families, foster carers, settings and organisations
taking up membership to the Toy Store. The outreach project has also supported
106 hard to reach and vulnerable families by offering them one-to-one support
through home visits and access to the toy library sessions.

Karen said that she has had a number of parents expressing their devastation at
the prospect of the charity closing down next year as many people have formed
friendships through the toy sessions. As well as the incredible impact that the
charity has had on families across the city, it has also been activitely helping
the environmnet by reusing and recycling toys. Karen added: “It is huge. It
isn’t just sitting in a group and playing with toys. It has had a huge impact on
families.

“I know funding is getting harder and harder to find - people have less money to
give away but it is such a crucial service.”

The popular show sees singles mingle in a Mallorcan villa in hopes of finding a
new partner.

Mimii Ngulube, a 24-year-old mental health nurse from Portsmouth, joined ten
other people looking for love in the new series. She describes herself as a
“girls' girl” and spontaneously decided to apply after becoming dissatisfied
with the Portsmouth dating pool. She hopes to bring style and laughs to the
villa as she meets the other contestants next week.

Speaking ahead of the new series, Mimi said: "The pool in Portsmouth is not
giving. I’ve tried dating, speaking to people on social media and it just hasn’t
been successful. Applying was a spontaneous thing, I didn’t expect to get here.
I’m a girls’ girl. My girls are my rocks and I’m theirs so I’ll be a good friend
as well as going in there to find a man. "I like dressing up so I’ll bring
style, and I’d like to think I’m quite funny so I’ll make people laugh. Bringing
honesty as well — I’m good at picking up on people's personality traits and
side-eyeing those who might be a liar."

Leader Sir Keir Starmer visited Portsmouth for the D-Day commemorations on
Southsea Common last week, meeting local veterans and sea cadets. The party is
also pledging to put the Armed Forces Covenant into law to strengthen the rights
of veterans, service personnel and their families.

Mr Starmer said: “The ultimate service is that of our armed forces personnel and
veterans. Britain owes a huge debt of gratitude for all they have given our
country. My changed Labour Party, once again a party of service, will repay that
commitment with a new package of support for veterans, service personnel and
their families.

“We will establish a new armed forces commissioner and enshrine a new Armed
Forces Covenant fully into law.” The armed forces commissioner will be an
independent individual which is tasked with supporting service personnel and
their families.

Portsmouth South candidate Stephen Morgan said: “We must remember the deep
gratitude and respect serving men and women of our Armed Forces deserve and the
treatment they should be entitled to. That’s why Labour has set out how we will
improve the lives of those who serve and their families in Portsmouth and
elsewhere.

“With a new independent champion, a legal guarantee of fair treatment and
ensuring our veterans are properly respected, we will right the wrongs of recent
years in the treatment of our Forces and their families.” The Conservative Party
has pledged to raise defence spending to 2.5 per cent of GDP by reducing the
number of civil servants.

General Election: Conservative manifesto promises rise in defence MoD, Royal

The Conservative Party has promised to increase defence spending by cutting

Tuesday 11 June @ 12:11

Prime minister Rishi Sunak’s commitment to raise military funds to 2.5 per cent
of GDP was reaffirmed in the Tory manifesto today, but would only be possible if
sacrifices were made elsewhere. The Conservative Party said the civil service
would be reduced to pre-pandemic levels to meet the defence spending target.

It adds the party also wants to halve the amount of taxpayers’ money spent on
external consultants and “introduce controls on all ‘equality, diversity and
inclusion’ initiatives and spending.” The manifesto said a further 25,000 civil
servants would be moved outside London. Other pledges include halving migration
every year, introducing a migration cap and making gradual cuts to national
insurance.

of GDP by cutting civil service spending. Picture: James Manning/PA Wire

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt previously said defence spending would be increased when
economic conditions allow. Calls from former top brass, defence specialists,
serving politicians and former secretaries of state for defence to increase
funds for the armed forces have been growing louder in recent months. Tensions
have been growing worldwide with the conflict continuing to rage in Gaza,
repeated attacks on ships in the Red Sea by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels and
Russia’s continued invasion of Ukraine.

Defence secretary Grant Shapps previously described the UK as being in a pre-war
world. Picture: James Manning/PA Wire Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer

Defence secretary Grant Shapps previously described the UK as being in a
“pre-war” world, adding the government remains committed to bolstering the armed
forces. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said the pledges made by the current
government are presented in a “Jeremy Corbyn-style manifesto” that will load
everything into the wheelbarrow” without explaining how to pay for it.

Speaking at Whale Hill Primary School in Middlesbrough, he added: “The money
isn’t there, it is a recipe for five more years of chaos.” Mr Sunak, of
Southampton, garnered severe criticism from opposition politicians, veterans and
members of his own party after not attending part of the D-Day commemorations in
Normandy last week - being forced to apologise.

Daisy Cooper, deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats, said: “Rishi Sunak got one
thing right in this speech: people are frustrated with him and the Conservative
Party. This manifesto isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. No one will believe
anything they’re promising today.”

Royal Navy: Commandos take stranded Czech D-Day veterans stuck in Jersey to
Normandy Landings commemorations
Thoughtful naval commandos gave two D-Day veterans a lift to the Normandy

Commando Merlins from 845 Naval Air Squadron flew Charles Strasser, 97, and Jirí
Pavel Kafka, 100, to the Omaha Beach memorial service last week after they got
stuck in Jersey. The civilian plane which flew to the channel island to pick up
Mr Strasser, who settled in Jersey, malfunctioned due to a minor technical
fault.

Two Merlin helicopters from Commando Helicopter Force - Navy 750 and 751 - were
using Jersey as a “forward base” to assist with the commemorations. A message
was passed on to Lieutenant Commander Bob Powell, aircraft commander of Navy
751, who agreed to assist them.

Czech veterans Charles Strasser and Jirí Pavel Kafka were flown to Omaha beach
for the D-Day commemorations after their plane was grounded due to a technical
fault in Jersey. Picture: Jon Guegan

He said: “It was an entire team effort by the eight aircrew involved as well as
the support provided by our two higher headquarters to get permissions quickly
in place. It was an absolute honour to be able to support the veterans get to
Normandy for the 80th anniversary of D-Day and to be a part of the international
commemorations.”

With world leaders converging on Normandy, the simple flight was difficult to
organise due to the highest possible level of security. The airspace over the
region was declared as a restricted zone. The Merlins received clearance and set
off for Caen, France. The normally-quiet provincial airport a buzz of activity:
the German Chancellor’s aircraft was landing, while Air Force One, the Royal
Flight and Ukrainian president’s jet were already on the ground.

The group comprised of two Czech Generals, a Colonel and five civilians made the
service on time, with the helicopters returning to their home base of RNAS
Yeovilton. Lt Cdr Powell said: ”We owe their generation so much and it meant not
only so much to us to be a part of it, but also to our friends and colleagues
who have thanked us since then for doing it. As a Junglie, it was an incredibly
rewarding, albeit unexpected, sortie to be involved in.”

Mr Strasser served as a dispatch rider with the Czech Independent Armoured
Brigade which went on to liberate his homeland from the Nazis in 1945. Mr Kafka
was one of 669 children rescued from occupied Czechoslovakia by Sir Nicholas
Winton and others on the eve of the Second World War. As a Jew he would almost
certainly have perished in the Holocaust had he not left Prague. He joined up
aged 18 and become a radio operator and gunner with the RAF.

Assigned to 311 (Czech) Squadron, he flew in Liberator bombers to provide cover
against U-boat and German surface aircraft to protect the invasion fleet.

Surrey man jailed 18 years after "senseless and violent" Southampton assault

A man has been sent to prison after the victim of an assault in 2006 died eleven

Arjan Balla, of Whyteleafe in Surrey, was sentenced to 12 months in prison for
manslaughter following a four year search for him by Hampshire police. Balla
assaulted his boss, Anastassios Delis from London, in Southampton on November
2006, punching him a number of times and causing him to fall and hit his head.
Anastassios suffered a severe head injury and never recovered consciousness,
passing away in December 2017.

Balla, who was using a false name of Tahir Karaj at the time, was sentenced to
three years in prison for grievous bodily harm in 2007. However, following
Anastassios’ death in 2017, which pathologists said was a direct result of the
attack, the attorney general gave authorisation to charge Balla with
manslaughter.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, working with Interpol, the National
Crime Agency, the Crown Prosecution Service, and Albanian authorities, found
that Balla was his true name and he was living in Albania, having been deported
in 2007. Police intercepted Balla at Stansted Airport on Friday, January 26 when
he flew back to the UK and were then able to confirm his true identity through
his fingerprints and DNA.

Balla pled guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced on Monday, June 10 at
Southampton Crown Court. Police Staff Investigator Gary Sumner, who led the
manslaughter investigation following the death of Anastassios, said: “The
circumstances of this case are highly unusual and extremely sad, and we are
thankful that the family and loved ones of Anastassios Delis now have justice,
seven years after his death and 18 years after his assault.

Arjan Balla was initially sentenced to GBH following the attack in 2006.
However, following the victim Anastassios Delis' death in 2017, the police
searched for Balla again to charge him with manslaughter.

“Initial enquiries following the victim’s death were hampered by the fact that
Balla had been under a false identity in the UK, even throughout the initial GBH
criminal investigation and his imprisonment. That meant that initial efforts to
locate him under the name Tahir Karaj were unsuccessful, causing us complex
difficulties throughout the investigation.

“Following our own enquiries, alongside the support of the National Crime
Agency, we were eventually able to determine that Karaj was in fact named Arjan
Balla and he was arrested and charged swiftly after that.

“We are pleased that Balla will now face the consequences of taking another
man’s life in such a senseless and violent assault, and hope that this sentence
today demonstrates that we are committed to securing justice for the victims of
such horrendous crimes, no matter how much time has passed.”

Marwell Zoo took part in a competition, organised by the British Association of
Zoos and Aquariums, with the dream of winning and choosing an animal to have its
very own international day. After receiving support from hundreds of people, the
Hampshire zoo has climbed its way to success - and it has won the competition.

Taking place on August 16, 2025, the first interantional scimitar-horned oryx
day will take place to recognise the importance of protecting these endangered
animals.

In Marwell’s submission, Dr Tania Gilbert, said: “The scimitar-horned oryx is an
exemplar of what we can achieve when we all work together to solve a problem,
and demonstrates the very real impact that zoos can have in saving species and
their habitats.

“It is a beacon of hope in the midst of global biodiversity and climate crises.”

Marwell Zoo is celebrating their efforts of bringing the Scimitar-horned oryx
back from the brink of extinction.

Marwell has worked with scimitar-horned oryx since before the gates opened to
the public for the very first time in 1972 so nominating them was a natural
choice. Scimitar-horned oryx disappeared from the wild by the end of the 1990’s
due to over-hunting and drought but last year the International Union for
Conservation of Nature downlisted the species from Extinct in the Wild to
Endangered.

Sophie Whitemore, Marwell Wildlife zoologist and international studbook keeper
for the species, said: “We are so pleased that scimitar-horned oryx will be
recognised with its own international day.

“Not only will this bring more attention to a threatened antelope species but it
will also act as an emblem for other sahelo-saharan species and showcase the
important role zoos have in bringing species back from the brink of extinction.”

Scimitar-horned oryx fought off competition from the Andean bear, Somali wild
ass and lungfish amongst others before going up against harvest mice in the
final.

Dr Jo Judge the CEO of BIAZA said: “Our fun competition has a serious message.
We need to appreciate all aspects of nature from the very largest and memorable
to the small and forgotten. Nature is in crisis and it needs our help.

“Visitors to zoo and aquarium will know about zebras and lions and sharks, but
behind the scenes our member zoos and aquariums are equally dedicated to the
little-known species that make up the majority of life on the planet.”

Portsmouth City Council has granted planning permission for the second phase of
Landsec’s £45m investment into Gunwharf Quays which will “give visitors an
improved full day out experience”.

As previously reported, the first phase of the project is focused on The Avenues
and work will take place over the rest of this year.

A CGI of the planned revamp which, if approved.

Phase two of the investment is focused on Marlborough Square, one of the main
points of arrival to Gunwharf Quays. Works will include enhancements to the
entrance tunnel guests use when arriving via Portsmouth Harbour train station or
from the Historic Dockyard. The approved plans feature improvements to the
buildings’ external aesthetics, shopfronts, public realm and landscaping. There
will be more seating for guests, as well as bigger and more modern guest
washroom facilities to create a better all-day out experience. The plans also
include a new retail space to add to the diverse mix of retail brands at
Gunwharf Quays. Works - originally planned to start this summer - are now
expected to start this winter.

Yvonne Clay, centre director at Gunwharf Quays, commented: “This planning
consent marks a significant step in our long-term investment in Gunwharf Quays.
We’re focused on making improvements to every moment our guests spend with us
and ensuring we create the perfect environment for our retailers to continue to
flourish. Along with our ongoing sustainability actions and strengthened local
partnerships, this planning consent enables us to unlock even more value for
Portsmouth.”

Over 500 members of the local community have helped Landsec refine its Vision
Document and Design Guide for Gunwharf Quays, which provides over-arching design
principles for future planning applications. Works on The Avenues have commenced
and will progress over the next six-months. It’s anticipated that proposals for
future phases of the £45m investment project will be shared later this year.

The Longcroft Luxury Cat Hotel Group is set to open a new accommodation in
Bursledon, with guest able to book the cats in for a stay from July 2024. This
will be the 25th hotel to be opened by the group and it will be owned and run by
Sheryl Downing from her home near the River Hamble.

Owners will be able to leave their cats in the hotel safe in the knowledge they
will be pampered. Every suite has its own climate controlled bedroom, private
play area, and multi storey viewing platforms for pets to lounge one. Sheryl,
who is from an NHS background and has always rescued kittens in need of care, is
looking forward to welcoming cats to the hotel.

A new luxury cat hotel is set to open in Hampshire next month.

She said: “Longcroft Bursledon is set in our home, on a private road, located in
a conservation area, with a view of the historic Bursledon Windmill from our
garden. The River Hamble is on our doorstep. Due to our proximity to this
beautiful conservation area, we have an extraordinary variety of bird life
passing by, and the calls and chatter are always a pleasure to hear. Our own
‘floof bears’, George and Mickey, love this and we look forward to all of our
feline guests enjoying it too.

“I read an article in a magazine about Longcroft founder, Abi Purser, opening a
luxury cat hotel in her garden in Hertfordshire. I thought that would be such a
wonderful lifestyle - to do something I enjoy, spending time with gorgeous
kitties. I look forward to meeting other kitty lovers like myself and being able
to offer a home-away-from-home to their beloved pets, to give them complete
peace of mind when they are away.”

The chain of luxury cat hotels have been around since founder Abi Purser opened
the first one in 2010. The level of service provided, with animal welfare at its
heart, has seen it grow to 25 hotels.. The Bursledon hotel will be the fourth to
set up in Hampshire, joining ones in Four Marks, Romsey, and Liphook.

Tony Moulson, 65, has worked as a refuse collector for 45 years with Portsmouth
City Council, and he is about to leave to take retirement.

The 65-year-old has seen some huge changes across the industry as well as the
landscapes of Portsmouth during his time and he will be leaving his mark on his
team as he begins his retirement.

His team have celebrated his work over the years by contributing to his leaving
present which is a guided tour of the Warner Brothers Harry Potter Studio tour.

Richard Tebbutt, business manager, said: ‘There are guys here that have done 20
years, we have got a few that are in their 70s and I think that is amazing.

‘There is job security here. I think that is what the guys like and there is a
big sense of camaraderie, there is a work force of 90 here.’

Tony has worked with various teams during his time with Biffa, and said that the
main attraction to the job originally was the flexibility with hours and that
when he had a young family it meant that he could finish work when he completed
his rounds making it easier at home.

Tony said: ‘There has been a slight change since I started here. I started in
September 1977 on a temporary contract and I have been here ever since. Lorries
have got bigger and crews have got smaller.

‘There are still areas that I have never been down. The problem was for 35 years
I just did north of the city so anything south of Hilsea didn’t exist. They had
it easy down there, they didn’t have the hills.

‘There have been so many good memories over the years. I can remember walking
down when they brought the Mary Rose up, so yes it has been good.’

Chris Smith, the ex-business manager of the site, said: ‘They do about 15,000
steps a day and he has probably covered the equivalent of every house in
Portsmouth.

‘He has always been massively reliable, he has always been a great worker and
someone like Tony never lets us down. He is a shining example for the younger
generation of what hard work looks like and how to do the job. It is a brilliant
service over the years.’

Richard worked out that with the average number of steps that Tony has taken per
round, during his career he has walked the equivalent of circling the world
three times.

Tony said that he wants to take up swimming when it gets warmer and that he will
also be going for walks and spending time with his wife.

David Emmett, head of waste services, said: ‘It is amazing that he has been able
to put in such a service for the city for such a long time. It is absolutely
amazing.

‘It is a well deserved time to put his feet up after all of that walking.’
