Covering 930,000 hectares along 700 kilometres of meandering rivers, this UNESCO-designated area is a biodiversity hotspot with rare habitats such as floodplain forests, gravel and sand banks, river islands and oxbow lakes. It provides critical habitat for many endangered species, including the white-tailed eagle, the black stork, the little tern and a high diversity of typical fish species such as the sterlet. In addition to its ecological importance, the area has a rich cultural heritage, shaped by influences ranging from the Ottomans to the Habsburgs, which can be seen in the architecture of many of the region’s old towns. These rivers are vital to local communities, supporting traditional livelihoods through recreation, fishing and small-scale agriculture, as well as providing opportunities for ecotourism. This combination of ecological and cultural importance makes the reserve unique in Europe. Discover the rich history, current challenges and conservation and restoration efforts that are shaping the future of the Amazon of Europe.
