ATHENS – HISTORY AND CULTURE IN GREECE'S CAPITAL

The birthplace of democracy, Athens has stood as a major cultural capital for
over 2,500 years. The city was arguably the most famous in the world during
antiquity and has developed into a lively and cosmopolitan modern city that is a
pleasure to explore. Whether it's your first trip or your hundredth, Athens has
something to suit every visitor. From discovering the city's ancient history
through its ruins, museums, and monuments to enjoying a traditional Greek meal
in the relaxed Plaka district, you'll feel spoiled for choice by the number of
attractions and activities on offer in this lively city. Athens is also a
perfect staging point for further exploration of Greece. Wonderful attractions
such as the temple of Poseidon at Sounion, or the Corinthian Canal are
accessible from the city. Day trips to several islands are available from the
nearby port of Piraeus.

TOP ATTRACTIONS IN ATHENS

PLAKA – TRADITIONAL GREEK LIFE IN THE HEART OF ATHENS

The neighbourhood of Plaka lies within the heart of Athens and is characterised
by its traditional atmosphere that can be compared more closely with the
laid-back towns of the Greek islands than the heart of a busy modern city. Plaka
is one of the oldest sections of Athens and has largely been pedestrianized,
making it the ideal place to spend some time wandering the quaint streets. Enjoy
a cool drink and watch the world go by in one of the traditional cafés and
tavernas that line the shaded streets, or find the perfect memento of your time
in Athens in Plaka's small souvenir shops.

ODEON OF HERODES ATTICUS – ATHENS' FINEST ANCIENT THEATRE

Described by Pausanias as the finest example of its kind, the Odeon of Herodes
Atticus stands proudly at the base of the Acropolis, as impressive now as it was
in antiquity. Completed in 174 A.D., the Odeon was built to honour Herodes
Atticus' late wife and hosted musical contests and performances during the Roman
Period. This colossal theatre was restored in the 1950s and still holds musical
concerts and theatrical performances today. Experiencing a live performance
under the open sky, surrounded by the Odeon's ancient scenery is a once in a
lifetime experience, and one totally unique to Athens.

THE ACROPOLIS – THE HEART OF ANCIENT ATHENS

The Athenian skyline is dominated by the Acropolis, a rocky hilltop towering
above the heart of the old city and home to many of its most famous ancient
landmarks. The Acropolis was also the political centre of Athens, and home to
the world's first democracy. Ascend the sloping paths, passing the Theatre of
Dionysus and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, before passing through the imposing
Propylaea gate. Walk among the ancient stones and admire the beautiful
architecture and artistry of the temples within, including the Erechtheion with
its ornate Caryatid sculptures, and the iconic Parthenon, framed by views across
Athens.

THE PARTHENON – THE ICONIC SYMBOL OF ATHENS

The Parthenon is perhaps the most famous Greek temple in the world and has stood
proudly on the Athenian Acropolis for nearly 2,500 years. The now-ruined temple
is dedicated to Athena, the patron Goddess of Athens, and was constructed at the
height of Athenian power as a place of worship and a treasury to house the
wealth of the Athenian Empire. The Parthenon is best known for its towering
marble columns and richly decorated exterior, showing scenes from Greek
mythology. Many of these can be admired in the nearby Acropolis Museum alongside
artefacts from the temple's long history.
