STORY IS POWER. STORY IS PEACE. STORY IS PROGRESS.

As our global community, ourselves included, continues to experience and process
historic, collective trauma, we also seek kindness and empowerment wherever we
can find it—and for us at NaNoWriMo and We Need Diverse Books, this power exists
in the stories we read and the stories we share.

This summer, our organizations have teamed up to invest in our shared creative
community and deepen our commitment to joy and social justice through the power
of story.

There are an abundance of opportunities to spend donor dollars and make a
positive impact in this world. We invite our community members to reflect on
their philanthropic priorities and consider donating to causes that call all of
us to greater action, whether it is mutual aid, political advocacy, public
services, or arts nonprofits like ours. Stories have the capacity to build
empathy and teach us new ways of caring for one another, no matter the
challenge.

By giving to NaNoWriMo and We Need Diverse Books, together we can help transform
the world through the power of stories.

Champion the power of story with a $30 donation.

Check out our auction with items donated by amazing authors.

Join our creative community in mobilizing $40,000 in support of NaNoWriMo and
WNDB’s programs. There are more than 500,000 members between our two
organizations. We all come here to be inspired and supported by the power of
story.

We’ve Raised: $500
Our Goal: $40,000

Updated every 2 business days. Last updated: Monday, July 18, 2022.

Funds raised will be used to support diverse literary arts initiatives,
including:

 * WNDB’s commitment to fight the book bans sweeping the U.S. by providing
   resources to parents, educators, and readers;
 * NaNoWriMo’s strategic priority to broaden access to creative writing globally
   through digital advocacy and year-round writing programs;
 * Our overarching goal to build an inclusive, creative community that
   celebrates storytelling as an important lever for equity and justice.

This campaign will run from Monday, July 18 through Monday, August 1. At the end
of this joint fundraising drive, all funds raised will be distributed in a 60/40
sharing model between WNDB and NaNoWriMo respectively per our mutual agreement.

Thanks for your support. 📚

WHO WE ARE

We Need Diverse Books (WNDB) and National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo)
believe stories have power, and everyone should have access to that power. All
readers, young in age and young at heart, should find themselves in the pages of
a book, and all writers should be able to write and publish books that represent
their unique identities and creative visions.

Our work continues to intersect in the larger writing and publishing worlds,
which is why we have looked for creative ways to collaborate in recent years. In
2021, WNDB and NaNoWriMo presented two webcasts designed to help writers revise
their own work and write compelling personal statements, distributed Heartdrum
titles to 74 classrooms, and hosted our inaugural Authors in the Classroom
program, which engaged more than 60 students at two indigenous community schools
to participate in creative writing projects. These students were able to meet
and learn from published Native authors, including Art Coulson and Andrea
Rogers.

We Need Diverse Books™ is a 501(c)(3) non-profit and a grassroots organization
of children’s book lovers that advocates essential changes in the publishing
industry to produce and promote literature that reflects and honors the lives of
all young people.

NaNoWriMo is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides tools, structure,
community, and encouragement to help people find their voices, achieve creative
goals, and build new worlds — on and off the page.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

A joint fundraising drive is a new adventure for all of us. We believe in
abundance and joy in world building, and there’s no better place to start than
with our shared creative communities.

Here’s what you can expect in the next two weeks:

 * Special donor merch, goodies, and surprises at the $30 and up giving levels;
 * A digital auction for query critiques, postcards, and more from our favorite
   author and publishing professional friends;
 * And last but not least, lots of stories and community fun!

NaNoWriMo is hosting the online donation store where writers and readers can
make their gifts and browse our limited-edition summer drive goodie items. All
donor goodie items will be shipped from the U.S. the week of August 29, 2022. We
invite all participants to give at a level that best aligns with their own
personal privilege and financial means.

Make a $30 gift today.

WNDB is hosting the digital auction from Friday July 29 to Monday August 1.
Among the items available are query critiques and personal postcards from
authors such as Mary Robinette Kowal, Susan Dennard, and Celeste Ng. Stay tuned
for more information as we get closer to the auction start date.
