‘THE FREEDOM TO SAY GOODBYE IN YOUR OWN SPECIAL WAY’

Scroll down to get started

DIY MEMORIALS

At DIY-Memorials we give you the freedom to say goodbye in your own special way.
We believe every life deserves a sacred moment when family and friends gather to
remember. A service provides a natural time and place for us to think about the
moments we shared with our loved one and to share those memories with those
remaining. How we say goodbye reminds us what is most important in our lives.
Every life matters and is worth acknowledging and honouring in a special way.

It’s become common practice to conduct unattended cremations in place of
funerals. This may leave family and friends with unexpressed grief. Holding a
memorial service gives them an opportunity to say goodbye, connect with others
and remember that life goes on. This can be overwhelming but with our guidance
and support, we will help lessen your stress and empower you to craft a unique
experience that you’ll always remember.

Let us introduce ourselves… We are a passionate couple who value life and the
loved ones who enrich it. We’re reminded every day that everyone’s unique life
story is worth recording and celebrating.

GOOD GRIEF THE BOOK

‘Good grief, Joy’ my father would often exclaim to my mother. His expression had
a not-so-subtle meaning and it’s the title for my book. It may act as a reminder
that grief and its connotations are not all bad. On the contrary, ‘grief is
good’. In a moment our lives could change. A diagnosis of terminal illness,
tragic accident, or the loss of a loved one. Inevitably we all experience loss
at some stage in our life.

There are five parts to this book, Becoming Aware, Acknowledge, Learning
Acceptance, Learning Tolerance and Self-Care. As an acronym, they spell BALLS,
making it easier for you to recall and bounce back from adversity. Some people
seem to be able to manage better emotionally and are able to pause when
overwhelmed by a loss or any difficulties in life.  Good Grief might act as a
reminder of how deeply we care for ourselves, our community and our planet.
Remember ‘tough times don’t last; however, resilient people do.’ Good grief.

SOME KIND WORDS

"What can I say! Dean is the most incredible MC and was an absolutely perfect
fit to oversee my husbands funeral. I felt like Dean was part of our family with
the way he related to me and my stories of my loved one that died suddenly. It
was hard enough having a covid restricted funeral at the highest part of our
pandemic, however Dean made me feel at ease, we shared laughs and the way he
delivered the funeral was just full of love, laughter, kindness. He understood
our vibe and made the whole experience so easy. Kindness, warmth, and a bloody
amazing personality is what you get with Dean. He is truly a man for all
occasions."

Courtney Thoreson
"Dean was the celebrant who conducted the service for my beloved husband Lloyd.
From the moment I met Dean I felt comfortable as he was so caring and
compassionate. His service was beautiful and he spoke as if he’d known us all
his life. He made the day so memorable and it was a lovely ceremony even though
I was heartbroken. I couldn’t recommend him highly enough. We keep in touch from
time to time which I appreciate it’s a lovely personal touch."

Marian Taylor
"Dean was the most wonderful celebrant at my husbands service. He was caring,
considerate with a wonderful manner. The day was extremely difficult to
comprehend but Deans manner made it somewhat easier. I cannot recommend him
highly enough. My family, a large one, all had the same thing to say. Dean was
sensational. I cannot speak highly enough about Dean. You will not be
disappointed."

Noni Monton
"Last September, my dear friend and companion Pat, passed away from Pancreatic
cancer. We needed a funeral celebrant and were at a loss to know where to start.
The funeral director recommended Dean to be our celebrant. From the moment we
met Dean to discuss proceedings, we felt completely at ease! Dean conducted the
funeral with such compassion, finesse, and a little humour where appropriate,
one would assume he knew Pat very well. How lucky and blessed we were to find
him! I cannot thank him enough for his warmth, compassion and professionalism."

Lenore Adam
"I am so very pleased we were recommended Dean as the celebrant to help us
farewell my father who recently left us. Not only did Dean deliver a wonderful
service and celebration of my dad's life, he supported us every step of the way
with the planning. His compassion, empathy, experience and support was
invaluable in helping us get through a very hard time. I cannot commend highly
enough."

Rob Lennon
"Dean officiated at our son Travis's celebration of life in March 2021. While it
was an extremely distressing time for our family, Dean was so empathetic and
caring which made it easier for us. Many people who attended thought he was a
family member or friend. He took the time to speak with us and get to know what
our beautiful son Travis was like. He guided us through the whole process and
gave us excellent advice. What could have been a morbid day was instead a time
to truly celebrate Travis's life and to honour his memory. As a family, we could
not recommend Dean more highly."

ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS WE OFTEN GET ASKED

Q) What to do when a loved one passes away?

The first thing to do is ‘Search Funeral homes near me’ On speaking with a
funeral home, they will take some brief details and from there arrange
collection and transportation of your loved one and commence the required
paperwork. If you would like our recommendation contact us directly with any
queries or to discuss your unique needs and wishes. We look forward to being of
service to you.

Q) I’m unsure should we have a funeral or a memorial service?

When organising a service, giving thought to your loved one is the single most
important step. First check your loved ones wishes in documents for example a
pre-funeral/cremation plan. Alternatively check other personal documents
outlining their final wishes. If your still unsure contact us directly with any
queries or to discuss your unique needs and wishes. We look forward to being of
service to you.

Q) How do I organise a memorial service

Most families are unsure where to start and what needs to be done. That’s why
were created the DIY-Memorials eBook. To accompany this ebook, we’ve provide an
easy-to-use spreadsheet, which lists the tasks, instructions and insights on how
to tick each task off your list.  You don’t have to do this alone, reach out if
you have any queries or to discuss your unique needs and wishes. We look forward
to being of service to you.

Q) Why should you choose a memorial service?

Do it your way, in your timeframe, when it’s convenient for you and loved ones.
You can manage your budget for the service, which may include an officiant,
musicians, PA system, permit, catering and other personnel fees or none of them
at all. It affords a family flexibility to hold a highly personalised
farewell. Reach out if you have any queries or to discuss your unique needs and
wishes. We look forward to being of service to you.

Q) When is the death certificate issued?

Generally it takes three weeks from the date of the cremation for the
certificate to be provided. Please note if the coroner has conducted
investigations the certificate generally takes 6 to 10 weeks to arrive. Reach
out if you have any queries or to discuss your unique needs and wishes. We look
forward to being of service to you.

Q) What happens if I’d like to have a memorial service interstate or overseas?

Obtain documentation from the crematorium or your funeral home confirming the
contents of the container as cremated remains.  Also have a copy of Death
certificate and check with the country, state or territory for their specific
incoming requirements. For more information contact Department of Foreign
Affairs and Trade website.

Q) Can I have a memorial service at home, a park or favourite location?

You can have a memorial service in most locations. If you choose a public space,
let authorities know. Some shire councils do require you to secure a permit. Let
your local authorities know, so you can celebrate your loved one’s service with
peace of mind. Reach out if you have any queries or to discuss your unique needs
and wishes. We look forward to being of service to you.

Q) Do I need to have the ashes for a memorial service?

There are no rules for a memorial service. You could set up a memorial table
with or without a loved ones ashes. You may simply choose a photo or favourite
items, flowers or a candle to light to commence and blow out to conclude the
service. Reach out if you have any queries or to discuss your unique needs and
wishes. We look forward to being of service to you.

Q) Can I choose not to collect my loved ones ashes?

You may not wish to have the ashes returned after the cremation. The funeral
home or cremation service will require a signature as confirmation and can
scatter or dispose of the ashes on your behalf. Reach out if you have any
queries or to discuss your unique needs and wishes. We look forward to being of
service to you.

Q) Who do I notify that a loved one has passed ?

Before you get started a death certificate needs to have been registered with
Births, Deaths and Marriages. The following service only works when they can
match the details provided to this record. The Australian Death Notification
Service lets you notify multiple organisations of a Loved ones passing through
one simple and secure process, reducing the number of painful conversations.

Q) Can I call someone or have someone call me to talk through the process?

Yes, please contact us directly with any queries or to discuss your unique needs
and wishes. We look forward to being of service to you. Reach out if you have
any queries or to discuss your unique needs and wishes. We look forward to being

WHERE WORDS FAIL, MUSIC SPEAKS.

Famed children’s author Hans Christian Anderson said this and how right he is.
Over the many services, we have performed there is one question we get asked all
the time. “What music would you recommend”? So we thought we would start a
catalogue. Please click on the Spotify logo to be taken to our library of 18
playlists. Each song is carefully selected to provide inspiration for your
special event. Hope it helps
