QUESTIONS ABOUT PCR TESTS

HOW DO GARGLE TESTS AND SWAB TESTS DIFFER?

There are two ways to take a Covid-19 sample.

The best-known method is the nose and throat swab. A small cotton swab is
inserted in mouth and nose throat.

Gargling is a relatively new method. The World Health Organization WHO has
equated it with the nose and throat swap in terms of accuracy. And in Vienna,
this method has already become the standard. This method benefits from being
simple, pain-free and more pleasant for the individuals getting tested.

IS THE RT-PCR THE RIGHT TEST IF I NEED A PCR TEST?

Yes, RT-PCR tests is used to detect SARS-CoV-2 viruses in samples. RT-PCR tests
detect RNA-viruses, PCR tests detect DNA viruses. SARS-CoV-2 is an RNA virus, so
it can be detected with the help of the RT-PCR method.

The reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (short RT-PCR) is the
combination of two methods of the molecular biology – the use of reverse
transcription (RT) and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) – to detect RNA.

SHOULD I SCHEDULE A VISIT FOR THE PCR TEST?

To avoid waiting times we kindly ask you to book an appointment in advance
online via our booking form.

HOW OLD DO I HAVE TO BE TO GET TESTED VIA PCR TEST?

Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by their parents or legal
guardians. Minors 16 years of age or older can independently register for the
test and do not need to be accompanied to the testing facility but need to
provide the parents’ or guardians’ written consent when taking the test.

When planning your tests, please keep in mind that testing can be an
intimidating experience especially for younger children. In some instances,
children may refuse to be tested or their behavior makes safe testing
impossible. To ensure the safety of your child and the reliability of our tests,
Coronatest.de reserves the right to refer you to a pediatrician if necessary.

WHY DO YOU OFFER THE GARGLING TEST TOO?

We provide a gargle test for PCR testing. This is a less common method that we
offer for a variety of reasons. Many people find gargling to be more pleasant
than a nose and throat swab. Using this method, we can offer PCR testing to
children ages 6 and above. In addition, the test procedure can be done entirely
without direct contact with our staff.

This gargling method is now being recommended by the World Health Organization
(WHO) as an alternative to the nose and throat swab. And in Vienna, this method
has already become the standard. The Apotheken-Umschau reported on this.

Scientific background and more information:

Saliva from the pharynx and nose and throat swabs have achieved similar
SARS-CoV-2 detection rates. As saliva can be easily collected, the use of saliva
as an alternative sample type is being recommended as a means to detect
SARS-CoV-2. (full study: Europe PMC)

An increase in testing methods beyond the commonly used nose and throat swab
allows for a higher number of tested individuals and more effective monitoring
of the spread of COVID-19. (full study: PubMed)

WHY IS YOUR PCR TEST SO LOW IN PRICE?

We have very low prices for our PCR tests because our procedures are different
than in a doctor’s office where every analysis is done one after the other and
the results are genrated and sent by hand.

Currently many people need tests for a detection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. For
such a large amount of people procedures have to be adapted and that is what we
did. We can make that happen with partners that are focussing on effectiveness
just like us.

We save time because we improved procedures, simplified and digitized them. And
who saves time, saves money. And that leads to a big advantage in price for you.
We are pretty happy being able to offer you that.

HOW IS THE PCR TEST PERFORMED?

Our gargle test is performed with a light saline solution that you gargle for 20
seconds. The PCR swab test is performed with a thin cotton swab that gets
inserted into mouth and nose throat. The sample is then sent to the lab and
analyzed.

WHAT IS THE EXPRESS PCR?

Express PCR tests are processed directly at the test station. Processing takes
20 minutes. The test costs €119.99 incl. VAT

Please note: There is a limited number of Express PCR machines at each test
station. During times of high demand, this means that there might be a delay
before your test sample can be processed. Our staff will let you know if there
is currently a wait.

In 98% of the cases you will receive your result within 30 minutes to 3 hours.

WHAT IS THE SAME DAY PCR?

For a Same Day PCR, samples are evaluated on the same day if the test is
performed before the deadlines listed below. The test costs €74.99 incl. VAT

In 98 % of the cases you will receive your result on the same day (before
midnight), if the test is performed

 * in Fürth / Würzburg until 12 noon
 * in Munich / Augsburg until 1 p.m.
 * in Ulm / Mannheim until 2 p.m.
 * in Karlsruhe until 3 p.m.
 * in Stgt Milaneo / Paderborn until 5 p.m.
 * in Stgt Königsbau / Dortmund / Nürnberg until 6 p.m.

WHEN AND HOW WILL I RECEIVE MY PCR TEST RESULT?

After the testing process, the gargle sample is sent to a lab and analyzed. You
will then receive your result as a PDF document at the email address you used
during registration. You can print it out yourself if desired.

The PCR test results are currently sent out within 24 – 36 hours in 98% of
cases.

WHAT IS PCR TESTING?

PCR testing is a standard practice in virus diagnostics which can be partially
automated. To do this, the samples have to be transported to the lab as quickly
as possible. With the PCR method, the genetic material of the virus is
multiplied to such an extent that it can be detected even if it is only present
in small quantities. This procedure currently takes about four to five hours.
Additionally, the transport to and preparation period in the lab as well as
potential wait times because of high sample volume also take some time. (source:
Bundesgesundheitsministerium)

WHICH DATE WILL BE INCLUDED ON MY TEST RESULT?

Your test result will include date and time of both test implimentation and
issuance of test result.

WHAT WILL MY PCR TEST RESULT LOOK LIKE?

Here you see an example of a PCR swab test result with all contained
information. The results are always in english AND german: Example PCR test
result

The result of the PCR gargle test looks the same but with the different method.

ARE THE PCR TESTS OFFICIALLY APPROVED?

All of our PCR test results are certified in an officially recognized and
licenced German laboratory by our laboratory physician.

QUESTIONS ABOUT ANTIGEN RAPID TESTS

SHOULD I SCHEDULE A VISIT FOR THE ANTIGEN RAPID TEST?

We recommend booking the test in advance online via our booking form
(registration & payment) to avoid waiting times.

CAN I GET TESTED VIA ANTIGEN RAPID TEST WITHOUT PRE-REGISTRATION?

Yes, you can visit at any time. Please allow for 15 minutes for registration and
sampling. During peak times, there may be a short wait.

HOW OLD DO I HAVE TO GET TESTED VIA ANTIGEN RAPID TEST?

Minors over the age of 12 may book tests and get tested on their own. Children
under 12 must be accompanied to the test by a parent or legal guardian.

Due to child-safe testing methods, Antigen Rapid Testing can be done at any age.

HOW IS THE ANTIGEN TEST PERFORMED?

For the antigen rapid test, a sample is taken from the mucous membranes of the
respiratory tracts. This is done by swabbing the throat and nasal passages. The
sampling procedure is performed by our experienced staff quickly, thoroughly and
with minimal discomfort. You will receive the test result 20 minutes later via
email.

WHEN AND HOW WILL I BE INFORMED OF THE RESULT OF THE ANTIGEN TEST?

After the sample has been taken, you can leave the testing facility. You receive
your test result within 20 Minutes via e-mail sent at the e-mail adress that you
have registered with.

HOW HIGH ARE THE SENSITIVITY AND SPECIFICITY OF YOUR ANTIGEN TESTS?

The antigen rapid tests we use have a sensitivity of 98.5 % and a specificity of
100 %. This information will also be included in the document containing your
test result.

WHAT WILL MY ANTIGEN TEST RESULT LOOK LIKE?

Here, you can find an example of an antigen test result with all contained
information: Muster Antigen-Testergebnis

ARE THE ANTIGEN TESTS OFFICIALLY APPROVED?

Yes, all of our antigen rapid tests are approved; additionally, we only use
tests which have been listed by the Bundesinstitut für Arzneimittel und
Medizinprodukte (BfArM) according to § 1 Abs. (BfArM). For further Information
about the listed products, see this page.

WHAT IS ANTIGEN TESTING?

Antigen tests detecting the protein structures of SARS-CoV-2 work similarly to
pregnancy tests. A sample taken with a nose and throat swab is applied to the
test strip. If the SARS-CoV-2 virus is detectable in the sample, the protein
components of the virus react with the test strip, causing a change in color.
Advantages of the antigen tests is that they are low in price and the results
are ready within 20 minutes. The easy handling of point-of-care (PoC) antigen
tests allows for testing outside of a laboratory, for instance in care
facilities, medical facilities, or doctor’s offices without a diagnostic
laboratory. Here, a PoC antigen tests can help to identify asymptomatic,
possibly infectious persons and to limit the spread of the virus through
suitable measures such as temporary self-isolation. (source:
Bundesgesundheitsministerium)

QUESTIONS ABOUT ANTIBODY TESTS

WHAT DOES THE ANTIBODY TEST DETERMINE?

The antibody test will check the presence of antibodies against the coronavirus
SARS-CoV-2, the cause of the disease Covid-19. The test measures qualitatively
and quantitatively: both presence and number of antibodies in the blood.

HOW DOES THE ANTIBODY TEST DIFFER FROM AN ANTIGEN RAPID TEST OR A PCR TEST?

Unlike Antigen Rapid Tests and PCR tests, antibody tests do not detect whether
an infection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus is currently present. Since the
body only forms antibodies to diseases after some time, the antibody test is
only meaningful after about 2 weeks after the infection or the (second)
vaccination.

DO I NEED AN APPOINTMENT FOR THE ANTIBODY TEST?

Like all tests at Coronatest.de, the antibody test is also possible without an
appointment. You also can book an appointment with prior online payment if you
prefer. To speed up the testing process, we recommend prior online registration
and contactless payment.

WHAT IS THE MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENT TO GET TESTED?

There is no minimum age for the antibody test. In the case of minors, the finger
prick must be performed by the parents or a person with parental authority.

WHEN AND HOW WILL I RECEIVE THE RESULT OF THE ANTIBODY TEST?

You will receive the result of your antibody test as soon as the machine
evaluation of your blood sample is completed. This process takes about 20
minutes. As soon as your result is available, we will send it to the email
address you provided during the registration process in accordance with data
protection regulations.

WHY SHOULD I GET TESTED?

There are several reasons to perform an antibody test. You can check your
vaccination status and measure your vaccination titer. You can also determine
whether you may have already contracted Covid-19 unnoticed. Some countries
require a minimum amount of antibodies in the blood for entry – you can check
this quickly and easily to make sure you meet the travel requirements.

WHAT DOES A POSITIVE RESULT MEAN FOR ME?

A positive result on an antibody test means that your body has developed
defenses against the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2. If you have been vaccinated
against the virus, it means that your vaccination was most likely successful. If
you have not yet received a vaccination, the positive result means that you have
most likely been infected with Covid-19 in the past.
Based on current knowledge, this means you are immune to SARS-CoV-2. It is
currently uncertain how long your acquired immunity will last.
Regardless of your test result, please follow the recommended protective
measures and hygiene tips provided by public health authorities to keep the risk
of infection and further spread of Covid-19 low and to protect yourself and
those around you.

WHAT DOES A NEGATIVE RESULT MEAN FOR ME?

A negative result on an antibody test means that your body has not (yet)
developed defenses against the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2. If you have been
vaccinated against the virus and your (second) vaccination was more than 2 weeks
ago, this may mean that your vaccination was not successful. Additionally, the
negative result means that you have most likely not been infected with Covid-19
in the past, or that a possible infection occurred so long ago that immunity is
no longer present.
Based on current knowledge, this means you are currently not immune to
SARS-CoV-2.
Please follow the recommended protective measures and hygiene tips of the health
authorities to keep the risk of infection and further spread of Covid-19 low and
to protect yourself and those around you.

WHAT DOES THE ANTIBODY TEST RESULT LOOK LIKE?

Here you can see an example of an antibody test result with all the information
included.

Sample antibody test – positive

Sample antibody test – negative

PERSONAL QUESTIONS

WHICH TEST SHOULD I CHOOSE?

Whether an antigen rapid test or a PCR test is best suited for your individual
needs depends on why you are choosing to get tested.

List of possible reasons for choosing an antigen rapid test:

 * I need my test result within 20 minutes
 * I am visiting family members and want to protect them
 * I need to present a negative antigen test result to the nursing home housing
   my family members
 * I have returned from a high-risk area and want to shorten my mandatory
self-isolation period after quarantining for at least five days
 * I want to travel to a region or country which requires antigen tests for
   entry

List of possible reasons for choosing a PCR test:

 * I want to travel to a region or country which requires PCR tests for entry
 * I have been explicitly mandated to present a PCR test to an institution or
   organisation
 * I prefer a PCR test for personal reasons

Feel free to also have look on our comparison of the main different points of
antigen and PCR tests.

WHEN AND WHY SHOULD I GET TESTED?

The best way to prevent transmission of COVID-19 is to protect yourself and
others from infection. It is essential to observe hygiene etiquette rules and
practice social distancing. Before interacting with others (e.g., at a family
reunion or a meeting with friends, a visit in a hospital or in a nursing home or
before returning to the office), or if you think you might have contracted the
disease, a test for infection will provide additional safety.

If you want to shorten your quarantine period after having returned from a
high-risk area, you can now (starting December 1, 2020) do so with an
appropriate test. This has been agreed upon by federal and state (Länder)
governments. (source: Berlin.de)

Additionally, due to the current situation, some countries require antigen tests
or even PCR tests for entry. Information on when and how you need to get tested
can be found on the website of the Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt) under
‘Sicher reisen’.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE TEST IS POSITIVE?

Being infected carries the risk of spreading the disease to others. If your test
result is positive, immediate quarantine and initiation of the measures defined
by the Robert-Koch-Institute in collaboration with the local Health Authorities
(Gesundheitsamt) are mandatory. Additionally you should do a PCR test after
receiving a positive antigen rapid test result. If the test is positive, you
will receive information on what to do next.

Because COVID-19 is a reportable disease under German law, we are obligated to
notify the local Health Authorities and initiate further procedures. Your local
Health Authorities’ contact information can be found
here:https://tools.rki.de/PLZTool/

DO I HAVE TO BE A RESIDENT OF THE RESPECTIVE CITY TO GET TESTED?

No, anyone can get tested regardless of residence. However, we do require a
personal ID card for verification of your personal data.

QUESTIONS ABOUT MY TRIP

CAN I USE A NEGATIVE TEST RESULT TO TRAVEL?

Corona regulations differ in different parts of the world. Generally, the
respective country decides which kind of documentation is required. We recommend
the Website of the Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt) for current and extensive
information on testing and travel.

IS A NEGATIVE RESULT ACCEPTED AS AN OFFICIAL DOCUMENT IF I RETURN FROM A
HIGH-RISK/VIRUS VARIANT AREA? CAN IT REDUCE MY QUARANTINE PERIOD?

In the case of prior stay in a high-risk area, the quarantine period is
generally ten days and can be terminated prematurely if proof of recovery, proof
of vaccination or negative proof of testing is submitted via the upload portal
of the digital entry application. The quarantine ends at the time of
transmission. If a proof of recovery or vaccination is already transmitted prior
to entry, no quarantine is required. In the case of transmission of a proof of
test, the underlying test must have taken place no earlier than five days after
entry.

Before departure, please be prepared for your carrier (e.g. airline) to require
you to submit a current PCR test prior to travel if you have been in a virus
variant area at any time in the ten days prior to entry. After your arrival,
further PCR testing may be ordered by the health department at the airport or at
the place of segregation/quarantine. Please be aware of the 14-day quarantine
requirement, which also applies to vaccinated and recovered individuals. A
shortening of the quarantine period is not possible.
