Pre-College now offers nearly 300 non-credit, first-year, college-level
courses on campus in Providence, online — particularly after expanding remote

Why Brown Pre-College: Shriyan '23 (Summer@Brown)
"I came to Brown, because I wanted to meet new people and…try and figure out
what I want to major in.
Going to Brown changed my perspective about choosing a major. The class that
I took—Therapeutic Engineering—was very in-depth and informative to me, while
also being a true challenge. Most importantly, the class was exciting and
super interesting to me.
Although I still haven’t decided my major for sure, going to Brown has given
me a whole different idea about how college classes are and sparked an
interest in a couple of subjects (biochemistry, genetic engineering,
biomedical engineering) that I intend to further research.
Overall, the Pre-College experience was incredible. Coming to Brown was one
of the best experiences in my life, and it gave me a new perspective on the
college experience, moments that make me laugh and friends that I will never
forget."

"I chose to spend my time at Brown Pre-College because of the array of unique
and intriguing courses (over 300!) Brown offered. I also wanted to spend my
summer at Brown to experience what college life feels like.
I loved both of my classes as the materials covered were fascinating and
changed a lot of my pre-existing beliefs! Spending my summer at Brown
provided me with the opportunity to meet people from all over the world with
diverse backgrounds and cultures.

October 9th is recognized by Brown University as Indigenous Peoples' Day. We
especially honor and celebrate the Narragansett Indian Tribe, whose ancestral
homeland Brown University is situated on.
Photos 1 and 2: BELL: Rhode Island students visited the Tomaquag Museum in
Exeter, RI to learn and reflect on Indigenous history, culture, arts, and
Mother Earth and connect to Native issues of today. Throughout the BELL: RI
experience, students also learn about the history of the land from members of
the Narragansett Tribe. Pictured is Chrystal G Mars Baker walking students
through the museum and providing the history of Rhode Island’s first people
from an Indigenous point of view.
Photos 3 and 4: BELL: Alaska students visited the Alaska Native Heritage
Center and Cook Inlet Tribal Council (CITC) in Anchorage, Alaska. CITC helps
connect the BELL: Alaska environmental studies with the local native
perspective, including the history of indigenous Alaskans and their ongoing
work with thousands of members of the native community. Pictured is Mrs. Ann
Lawrence, who with Ossie Kairaiuak, met students at the Anchorage Museum to
provide an introduction to CITC, their work in the native community, her
experience as a native elder and she shared a taste of one of her traditional
recipes, muktuk.

Over the course of two weeks, students explored the interconnections between
environmentalism, Native history and leadership through site visits to the
Cook Inlet Tribal Council, Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, Matanuska
Glacier and the Peterson Bay Field Station.

#SceneatBrown: Pre-College students enrolled in 'Therapeutic Innovation: From
Discovery to Commercialization' utilized VR to navigate a therapeutic to the
receptor in various parts of the body. Through this hands-on experience,
students were able to apply their learning and analyze how effectively the
therapeutic bonded with the receptor.
Facilitated by Instructor Rudra Trivedi and Teaching Associates Olivia Perez
and Zakhar Lyakhovych, this course explored what it takes to make a
therapeutic—from the discovery of a new drug to testing, manufacturing and
finally commercialization by using a combination of lab experiments, case
study discussions and a final pitch presentation.

Resources for Success at #BrownPreCollege
1. Stop by the Pre-College Advising office to meet and chat with our Program
Advisors. They can help you navigate your time with us and maximize your
experience. Find us in room 125 of the Stephen Robert '62 Campus Center (by
Faunce Arch), Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
2. Living on campus? Your Resident Assistant (RA) is your go-to resource. A
current college student, your RA can help you with questions and problems,
help you meet new people and direct you to any resource you may need. They
live in the building with you and help to ensure a safe and vibrant
community.
3. Available 24/7, Brown's Department of Public Safety (DPS) has worked with
Pre-College for over 40 years and is excited to welcome you! DPS is a great
resource and can help you if you’re lost, unsure of where to go, if you’re
feeling unsafe or if there is an emergency. You may even get to meet Elvy,
DPS's black labrador comfort dog. Their number is available on the back of
your Brown ID.

Instructor Office Hours: An integral part of the college learning experience
is instructor office hours—get to know your instructors and take advantage of
their office hours. During these times you can ask about coursework, how they
got into their field or learn more about the subject.
Writing Center: Utilize the Writing Center for tutoring or writing
consultations—they’re here to help! Writing Associates are friendly Brown
graduate students who are trained to make suggestions that will help writers
formulate, clarify and elaborate on their ideas. Available in person and
virtually.
Libraries: One of Brown’s greatest assets are our libraries! Visit them
frequently and use all of their resources during your time with us.

We cannot wait to welcome you to Brown Pre-College; virtually, here in
Providence or at one of our locations across the globe!
Students who are joining us in person will receive an email from Brown
Pre-College two weeks prior to your scheduled arrival with check-in details.
Carefully review this email, use it to start planning your travel and save it
to refer back to.
Online students will receive an email one week prior to their course starting
with a link to their course orientation, as well as a reminder the day of
their course starting.
Check-in tip: Arrive early to provide ample time to check-in, attend a family
orientation and set up your room. We recommend leaving your luggage in your
car and bringing one parent, guardian or friend with you to Sayles Hall for
check-in where you will receive your Brown ID and your room key!

"I'm Jordan and last summer I took the Brown Pre-College course Laboratory
Techniques in Biomedicine! My classmates and I ran a number of experiments
over our two-week course. We often used gels to visualize the results of our
experiments. We used ELISA gels - which run vertically and show protein
fragments - as well as agarose gels - which visualize DNA fragments. I really
enjoyed all of the hands-on experience we got with real lab equipment and
procedures."

As part of Brown’s deepening commitment to supporting educational
opportunities for students in its home city, the University is providing full
scholarships to every Providence Public School District (PPSD) student who is
admitted to the Brown’s summer Pre-College Programs.
Pre-College offers college-level courses for thousands of high schoolers from
around the world, providing both a rigorous academic experience and robust
outside-of-the-classroom exploration. Now, every admitted PPSD student will

October 10th is recognized by Brown University as Indigenous Peoples' Day. We
especially honor and celebrate the Narragansett Indian Tribe, whose ancestral
homeland Brown University is situated on.
Brown is proud to offer an interdisciplinary initiative that explores the
cultural traditions and political experiences of Indigenous Peoples. Check

Celebrating 40 years of Brown Pre-College: Brown’s iconic Van Wickle gates
were built in 1901. Opened twice a year - inward for first year Convocation
and outward for Commencement - it’s tradition for many Pre-College students
to take photos at the gates.

In recent years, Brown and the Providence Public School District have
partnered with the goal of increasing the number of Providence-area students
who participate in Brown’s Pre-College Programs and the gains have been
significant.
The commitment to recruiting and enrolling more local students, Joi-Danelle
Whitehead, Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access, says, stems
from the program’s purpose — to make elements of the rigors of a Brown
education accessible to learners prepared for the experience from many
backgrounds and help participants build a foundation of skills that they’ll
employ in future study, careers and lives.
“We want to move students past the idea that college is not for them,”
Whitehead said. “By starting here at home and exposing them to Brown, we want
to show students how they can be successful here and that they can be

Over 100 Brown Pre-College students enjoyed two weeks in coastal Barrington,
Rhode Island! With exciting site visits and seminars, our Brown Environmental
Leadership Lab (BELL) programs immerse students in environmental and
leadership studies. During their time in Barrington, our students visited the
wetlands of Hundred Acre Cove, learned the history of the land from members
of the Narragansett Tribe and completed engaging outdoor labs during a

We are celebrating 40 years! Launched in 1982 with 99 students, Brown
Pre-College now offers nearly 300 non-credit, first-year, college-level
courses on campus in Providence, online — particularly after expanding remote
options during the COVID-19 pandemic — and through location-based programs in
domestic and international locations ranging from Alaska to Washington, D.C.,
to Italy and Spain. Enrollment has exploded to nearly 7,000 students in 2022,
