JOHN ELLIOT

1968 MERCURY COUGAR
Engine Size: 428 CJ
Transmission: AUTOMATIC
Stock No: 11916
Exterior Color: ONYX BLACK
Interior Color: RED

This is the actual car raced by Motorsports Hall of Fame, "Border Bandits" from
Sandy Elliot LTD. It was raced by John Elliot as driver and Barry Poole as
mechanic. The "Border Bandits", a Canadian duo, received their nick name because
of all the titles they took back to Canada with them from the US. In 1968 they
won the Stock Eliminator class in this very car. It was retired in 1974. It
wasn't until recently that the car was discovered by an auto enthusiast who
realized what it was. He spent 3 years restoring the car to perfection. It is
one of, if not the, nicest car I have ever seen.
It was restored using mostly all NOS parts, which for a Cougar was nearly
impossible to find. The restoration was documented with photos from start to
end. Also included is a binder full of receipts and several pages listing all
the part #'s. Its completely #'s matching! It is fully documented as a 1 of 1
car by Marti Autoworks, has original invoice, original owners cards, a photo of
it in 1968 at the drag strip and more. The restoration has only 34 miles since
completion. No detail was over looked from the factory markings to the smog
equipment. It has been featured in Ford Mustang Magazine and had a television
début on the Speed Channel's American Muscle Cars. It was the celebrity pick at
the 2004 Ford Nationals. In addition to it’s "as factory" restoration it also
has reproduction decals and tires / wheels to give it the look as you would have
seen it on the strip. The pedigree of this car being extremely rare (only 127
Cougars total came with the 428 engine) and desirable with a concourse quality
restoration and documented race history make it truly collectable to even the
most prominent collectors. Being a race car it was ordered bare bones, steel
wheels, manual steering and brakes and even radio delete! However it did come
with a competition suspension!
