The Orange Prize for Fiction is the UK’s only annual book award for fiction
written by a woman. Celebrating its sixteenth anniversary this year, the Prize
celebrates excellence, originality and accessibility in women’s writing from
throughout the world.

The Commonwealth Writers’ Prize, internationally recognised for promoting
ground-breaking works of fiction from across the globe, has announced an
eclectic mix of writers from the four regions of the Commonwealth who will be
heading to the final stages of the competition at Sydney Writers’ Festival in
May.

The 2011 regional prize winners are:

Africa:
Best Book: The Memory of Love by Aminatta Forna (Sierra Leone)
Best First Book: Happiness is a four-letter word by Cynthia Jele (South Africa)

Caribbean and Canada:
Best Book: Room by Emma Donoghue (Canada)
Best First Book: Bird Eat Bird by Katrina Best (Canada)

South Asia and Europe:
Best Book: The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell (UK)
Best First Book: Sabra Zoo by Mischa Hiller (UK)

South East Asia and Pacific:
Best Book: That Deadman Dance by Kim Scott (Australia)
Best First Book: A Man Melting by Craig Cliff (New Zealand)

Costa Book of the Year - Yahoo! We got it right. Of Mutability by poet Jo
Shapcott has taken out the main £25,000 prize for her delightful collection. Now

Derek Walcott, 81, has won the £15,000 T.S. Eliot Prize for Poetry for his 2010

Wellington curator and writer Jill Trevelyan won the non-fiction award for Rita
Angus: An Artist's Life. Kate de Goldi's, The 10pm Question, picked-up the
Readers Choice.

NZ Society of Authors Winners - A story about a high-school sex scandal that
jolts a group of teenage girls into a new awareness of their own potency and
power, The Rehearsal by Eleanor Catton won Best First Book .

Everything Talks by Sam Sampson (Auckland University Press) won hte Poetry prize
and Mates & Lovers: A History of Gay New Zealand by Chris Brickell (Random House

CHILDREN & YOUNG ADULT BOOK AWARDS

Blue Peter Shortlist - Just a hint of controversy this year as Trash by Andy
Mulligan was dumped from the list apparently due to violence & swearing. Some
people think the Beeb's decision is a load of old rubbish. Nine books listed.

Congratulations to Sam Lloyd and Philip Ardagh have won the Roald Dahl Funny
Prize . Lloyd's Mr Pusskins Best in Show won the prize for children aged six and
under,while Ardagh's Grubtown Tales: Stinking Rich and Just Plain Stinky was
named the best funny book for children aged seven to 14.
