We asked some of our favorite business experts for their tips and tricks that they have for other entrepreneurs that might be struggling with this aspect. “People with entrepreneurial mindsets are some of the most driven people on the planet, but it can be easy for us to get so wrapped up in our work that we forget about ourselves,” says Nathalie Walton, Co-founder and CEO of Expectful. “But, if you learn how to prioritize these goals and set attainable health and fitness standards, you can put that willpower that you already have into your personal life as well.” If you’re one of the many people who set a New Year's resolution to stay healthy but already feel like you’ve fallen behind, don’t worry! We have the 9 best fitness hacks for busy entrepreneurs listed below to help you reach your goals. PRIORITIZE YOUR MORNINGS It can be easy to hit that snooze button a few too many times, but setting the alarm early can be one of the best tips to set yourself up for success in your health and fitness goals. We all know how crazy the day can become for an entrepreneur. Even if your planner says you’ll be done by 6 with plenty of time to hit the gym or eat a healthy lunch, sometimes things don’t go according to plan. “Instead of saving your health and fitness routine elements that take up more time or require the most energy for the end of the day which might be super late or when you’re already exhausted, try doing things in the morning,” says Daniel Tejada, Co- Founder Straight Up Growth. “It takes a while to form habits, so stick with it. Mornings can become a time for fitness, health, and productivity if you plan them out right.” STAY HYDRATED There’s a reason nearly every fitness book, magazine, and article recommends drinking water. It keeps your body functioning at the highest level while also making you feel better overall. “A great way to make sure you’re drinking enough is to create points throughout the day that you drink a glass or bottle of water,” says Jack Gindi, CEO of Pori Jewelry. “Drink a glass or two when you wake up, a bottle of water with lunch, a bottle or two throughout the work day, and before you go to bed. This will help the amount of water in your body stay consistent and also not feel as overwhelming or like a chore to drink.” DON’T EXPECT TO MEET EVERY GOAL ON TIME Understanding that your life is a bit unpredictable and stressful can help you set goals. This doesn’t mean that you’re limiting yourself or setting the bar so low that you won’t see results, but you should ultimately be able to customize your goals to fit your life. “Setting goals is important, but you also have to take everything else into account,” says Reece Kresser , Co-Founder of Zizi. “Give yourself a bit of leeway when it comes to reaching the goals you’ve set. If your overall goal is improved health and fitness, stressing over reaching goals that might not happen because of other uncontrollable events that popped up isn’t going to help you achieve that goal.” ANNUAL EXAMS You probably went for an annual exam each year as a kid, but when was the last time you saw your physician to have a general wellness check? Many adults find themselves skipping their annual exams which can be detrimental to your overall health. “Before you even start setting goals, you should have your physician check your general wellness through an annual exam,” says Juan Pablo Cappello, Co-Founder and CEO of Nue Life. “Having a baseline is also helpful for future goal setting and when your next annual exam rolls around you’ll have something to compare results to if there was an area you needed to work on such as cholesterol, blood pressure, vitamin levels, or iron deficiencies.” STAY ACTIVE This doesn’t mean you need to be at the gym every day. Find small ways that can keep you moving throughout the day so you’re not stuck at a desk without movement to break up your schedule. “Take a walk around your workplace at lunch or try parking further away so you have to walk a few more blocks,” says Nick King, CEO of Vint. “Look for opportunities to take the stairs instead of the elevator and work in a light workout routine for your evening at home. This can even be a few sit ups or other strength training exercises that can be done from your living room.” MAKE YOUR OWN FOOD While many people enjoy the convenience of running out to lunch to grab a bite to eat nearby, it can be much more difficult to track the nutritional information of the meals when you’re not making it yourself. Additionally, by making your own food, you’re able to cater your diet to specific goals that you might have set. “Making your own food can help you achieve the goals you’ve set,” says Eric Elggren, Co-Founder of Andar. “When you go out to eat, there are so many tempting options on the menu that aren’t necessarily healthy. It’s also harder to know exactly what ingredients the meal has unless you’ve seen the food made in front of you. An added bonus here is that you’ll probably be spending a lot less on food if it’s coming from your own kitchen.” AVOID RESTRICTIVE OR TRENDY DIETS If your goal is weight loss, it can be tempting to find a diet that will show quick results. However, a lot of these will result in cravings, lack of energy, and a difficult regime. Instead, look for diets that encourage balance and the inclusion of all food groups to maintain a holistic and balanced menu. “We’re taught about food groups as kids for a reason,” says Daniel Sathyanesan, CEO and Founder of Winden. “The overall goal of food groups is to make sure you’re getting the appropriate amount of each type of food and nutrient in your diet. Researching balanced diets or even talking to a nutritionist about what you should be including in your diet are great places to start.” CREATE INCENTIVES Motivation can be one of the hardest parts for busy people, like entrepreneurs, to maintain during a health or fitness plan. Motivate yourself to remain committed to your goals by creating incentives for different mile markers in your health and fitness journey. “Allow yourself to enjoy rewards for being consistent or sticking to your goals,” says Stephen Skeel Co-founder and Executive Producer of 7 Wonders Cinema. “This could mean buying that little thing you’ve been wanting for a while, allowing yourself to enjoy a fancy tea or coffee, lunch with a friend, or whatever you find motivates you to stick with a plan.” DEFINE SUCCESS This is something entrepreneurs are familiar with. You have to define success in order to be productive throughout the process. Define what achieving these fitness and health goals looks like. What is the end goal? How will you know you’ve reached it? What does success mean to you? “Success doesn't have to be a number on a scale or being able to do something specific in the gym” says Michael Hennessy, Founder and CEO of Diathrive. “Success could be being able to walk up the stairs to your apartment without being out of breath. It could be eating something green with each meal. It could even be making it through the week without skipping a workout or indulging in dessert at the company dinner. Success can be small, big, or a combination of different goals throughout the journey.” CONCLUSION There are many tips and tricks you can use to work a health and fitness plan into your busy schedule as an entrepreneur. A lot of these tips revolve around understanding what you’re capable of doing at the moment and setting yourself up for success by being aware of what is realistic and attainable. Nathan Rohe 16h Lindenwood University 444 YouTube.com The term "silent protagonist" is often thrown around when discussing player characters in video games. These protagonists are often depicted with little or no personality or character for the purpose of allowing the player to insert themselves more personally into the game world and the narrative. While this can work for interactive media, like video games, narrative focused media need more fleshed out and interesting characters to drive the plot. However, there are exceptions to this rule and we are going to find out why one of best examples of this character in narrative driven media is the Mandalorian. "The Mandalorian" is a Star Wars television show exclusive to the streaming network Disney Plus. The show focuses on the title character simply known as Mandalorian. He is a very cold and efficient bounty hunter who speaks very few words, has almost no emotional attachments, and the audience (or other characters for that matter) never gets to see his face. At the beginning of the series you would be wrong if you mistook him for a robot. He is a man with little known about his past and almost no friends or loved ones. While many would say this makes a character an interesting and mysterious bad ass, it is often used to mask the fact that there's nothing unique about the character and they are quite generic. However, the Mandalorian has managed to become an interesting and beloved character in the Star Wars franchise. Despite his beginnings as a stoic, loner protagonist; he has grown into a more emotionally complex character due to his connection with the character known as Grogu, or as the internet called him; Baby Yoda. During one of his missions he's tasked with collecting this child and bringing him to the Empire. However, the Mandalorian forms a connection with the child and his character begins to slowly change from there. The Mandalorian's mysterious "lack of character" is part of the narrative of the ongoing series. He goes from a cold emotionless killer to... well... still being a killer, but one who grows a slightly more ethical code and begins to form bonds with other people. We slowly learn things about him, like his real name and his face looks like (which was a great character moment both times they did it). We are introduced to the armor shell the moves and sometimes talks, but thanks to Grogu we eventually see the man that hid behind the armor. The Mandalorian teaches us two things about "silent protagonists". The best "silent protagonists" are the ones that slowly reveal elements of their characters over time which creates "actual" mystery and character growth, and the ones that are driven by more fleshed out characters surrounding them (i.e. Master Chief and Cortana). While there is some truth to many creators using "silent protagonists" to mask thinly written characters, they can also be used to move plot and other characters along in interesting ways. They show us that a compelling character is defined by their actions, not their words. Keep Reading... The idea of waking up everyday to do the same thing with no end in sight is not the most appealing. For example, I typically dread Sundays because it brings on major anxiety and a bad case of the Sunday Scaries thinking about the laundry list of things I have to do the next week. However, by Monday morning I am more energized than ever and I am quickly checking off all those items on my list. So what's the deal? Well as the week carries on, I tend to lose steam. I wake up bright and early Monday and by Thursday I'm hitting snooze at least 3 times. I have to maintain a consistent level of energy throughout the week and remind myself to cut down screen time so I can focus on my goals. But the reality is this: routine is essential to having productive, healthy and creative lives. Routine is essential to giving us the freedom to make more important choices - those which may change the entire trajectory of our life. Below I've outlined some tips to help you build routine in your life and stay focused. 1) Wake up at the same time everyday, drink 12oz of water and write down 3 things you are grateful for. If you do this everyday it will shift your perspective and help you start each day on a positive note. 2) Eat a balanced and healthy diet. I always start my mornings with coffee and breakfast (eggs, toast, muffin, etc). Your body and brain need this to help you have a productive day. 3) Do one thing (it can be really small!) that will push you towards your long term goal. Whether that means researching more about your dream company or dream job, spending 30 minutes on a creative pursuit, or running 2 extra minutes on the treadmill. Show less Featured A REVIEW OF THE EIGHT BOOKS I READ OVER WINTER BREAK THE EIGHT BOOKS I READ WHILE HOME AND WHY YOU TOO SHOULD READ THEM! Grace Connors 09 February Miami University 919 Photo by Pixabay on Pexels My winter break was a blessed six weeks long, and I took that time to really focus on myself and my personal growth. One of the ways that I did this was by reading every day, even if it was just a small passage. I ended up reading eight books in total. Here's what I have to say about them. 1. "THE TATTOOIST OF AUSCHWITZ" — HEATHER MORRIS Genre: Historical Summary: "The Tattooist of Auschwitz" tells the story of Lale, a young Jewish man imprisoned in Birkenau during the Holocaust who becomes a tattooist for the camp and falls in love with Gita, a woman whose serial number he tattooed. Overall rating: 10/10 Review: I genuinely loved this book and flew through it. It was painful to read at times and will break your heart, but will remind you of the good in people and, not to be cheesy, but the power of love. 2. "ANXIOUS PEOPLE" — FREDRIK BACKMAN Genre: Fiction Summary: A bank robbery gone awry turns into a hostage situation at an apartment open house across the street. The story follows each person before, during, and after the hostage situation, including the two detectives investigating the event. This is a truly hilarious story that draws attention to one simple truth: we are all, truly, idiots. Overall rating: 12/10 Review: I read this entire book in one day; I could not put it down. I felt so completely attached to each character and couldn't wait to learn more about each person and the developing plot. It is easily one of my favorite fiction books of all time. 3. "THE ORPHAN HOUSE" — ANN BENNETT Genre: Historical Fiction Summary: "The Orphan House" follows three characters. There is Sarah, who has just left her sneaky husband and decides to purchase the orphan house where her father was adopted from, hoping to learn more about his birth mother. There is also Connie, the daughter of the man who owned the orphan house who is trying to come to terms with the secrets of her father's life. Finally, there is Anna, who exists almost entirely just in her own diary, which she gave to Connie decades before. Throughout the book, these three women become growingly intertwined. Overall rating: 10/10 Review: I loved this book. The character development was so impactful and inspiring. Following three different characters made the story that much more exciting as more information was slowly revealed to the reader before the other characters, making you feel as if you are a part of the story, too. 4. "COBBLE HILL" — CECILY VON ZIEGESAR Genre: Fiction Summary: This story follows several eclectic families that all live in the quaint New York City neighborhood, Cobble Hill. Each family has its own set of drama and problems, whether it be secret jobs, scandalous crushes, wives that disappear on the regular, and more. However, it brings to light the idea that no matter how different we all may seem from one another, we really aren't that different after all. Overall Rating: 8.5/10 Review: It wasn't my favorite book ever just because it wasn't super substantial. Ultimately I just felt like I was just reading about random people in a neighborhood who just so happen to be enough of a mess that while it's realistic, it's funny. It was still entertaining, just a little too fluffy for myself. 5. "THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME" — MARK HADDON Genre: Fiction Summary: This story is narrated by Christopher, who is fifteen and has Asperger's Syndrome. Upon finding his neighbor's dog murdered, he begins to investigate who might have done it, an investigation that is very regularly hindered. Despite these setbacks, he begins to write a mystery novel for school that follows his investigation. Overall Rating: 9/10 Review: The back cover of this book is a little misleading. It is made out to be a crime novel or murder mystery, but in fact, is much more based on Christopher as an individual and his story. I still really enjoyed it and found it to be rather eye-opening, but it was certainly not what I had initially anticipated. 6. "A MAN CALLED OVE" — FREDRIK BACKMAN Genre: Fiction Summary: Ove is a curmudgeon older man whose incredibly orderly life is interrupted by his neighbors. The story follows Ove's present routing while offering insight into his past. His relationships with his different neighbors are complicated but develop throughout the story, reminding us that everyone has a different backstory and that maybe all the grumps we know aren't so bad after all. Overall Rating: 10/10 Review: Fredrik Backman is truly amazing. This book was incredibly heartwarming and a pleasure to read. I was thrilled to find out shortly after finishing it that they are making it a movie and I truly cannot wait as the whole time I was reading it I couldn't stop thinking about how great a movie it would make. 7. "TALKING TO STRANGERS" — MALCOLM GLADWELL Genre: Non-Fiction Summary: Gladwell explores why humans are so terrible at reading strangers. He uses real-world examples such as the Penn State Jerry Sandusky scandal, Sylvia Plath's suicide, Amanda Knox's trial, and more to help us better understand why we are simply awful at understanding the people we do not know. Overall Rating: 600/10 (is that allowed?) Review: Love does not even begin to describe how I feel about this book. I am not typically one for non-fiction, but I could not get enough of this book. I could not wait to learn more, a feeling I am admittedly not overly familiar with. Gladwell writes as if he's having a conversation with you, and I honestly wish he wrote every textbook I have ever had to read. I cannot recommend this read enough. 8. "A SLOW FIRE BURNING" — PAULA HAWKINS Genre: Mystery Summary: A young man is stabbed to death in a houseboat he was temporarily staying in. There are three women tied to him: his one-night stand from the night before he was found, his nosy neighbor who found him, and his aunt already mourning the recent passing of her sister and her son, who passed away about fifteen years before. The story follows each woman's life story, while not failing to add in an eccentric mix of other characters as well. Overall Rating: 8.5/10 Review: I ended with a mystery book to mix things up a bit. It was ultimately a very interesting story, but it also felt like just another murder mystery where the murderer was revealed a bit too soon for my liking. With that being said, I was still entirely enthralled by the character and plot development, and would still recommend it to a friend! Keep Reading... It's been said that this will be Bennett's final album. It's been nominated in this year's Grammy Awards. 8. "CHEEK TO CHEEK" (WITH TONY BENNETT) The first collaborative album Gaga and Bennett created was released in 2014. This was the first of many moments where Gaga would showcase different sides of her talent in the years to come. Gaga's interpretation of these songs take them to another place and she makes them her own. 7. "A STAR IS BORN" (SOUNDTRACK, WITH BRADLEY COOPER) Since this is a soundtrack, it's clear Gaga is writing from the perspective of a character. However, these are still her songs and her talent shines front and center. Bradley Cooper surprises people with his singing ability and serves as another great collaborator for Gaga. 6. "BORN THIS WAY" With "Born This Way," Gaga touched a generation of young people and inspired them to be themselves. While the significance of her impact can't be ignored, this was when it started to feel like the creativity was being forced. Lyrically, this album isn't her best. However, one can't deny the absolute bangers that occupy most of the track list. 5. "ARTPOP" "ARTPOP" was one of the most anticipated albums of 2013. However, it seemed to be considered a disappointment as a result. Many felt Gaga promised too much and couldn't deliver. Maybe the general public had moved on and the little monsters were the only ones left. Whatever the reason, the music from this album was still very good. It's a solid dance-pop album. 4. "JOANNE" "Joanne" saw Gaga in a stripped-down mode following the overwhelming nature of the "ARTPOP" era. It was a welcome and needed change of direction. It helped Gaga make her most personal and heartfelt album, while still allowing her personality to take center stage. The title track is named after and written for her late aunt who passed from lupus. 3. "CHROMATICA" Gaga has long discussed her mental health struggles and explores that theme on this album. It was written during one of the darkest periods of Gaga's life, however, the album is so full of life. It's lyrics detail a private struggle, but it's music drag you onto the dance floor. This juxtaposition, along with its focus, is what makes "Chromatica" one of her best albums. 2. "THE FAME" Gaga's debut album showcases an ambitious spirit with a cheeky sense of humor. Tracks like "Just Dance," "Poker Face," "LoveGame," and "Paparazzi" were huge hits at the time. The album was an incredible debut that forced the music world to take notice. In the early digital era, Gaga impressed many with her ability to dominate the field. 1. "THE FAME MONSTER" (EP) Written while on her debut tour, this album was initially supposed to be a re-release of her first album. However, it ended up being an entirely new album which explored Gaga's fears. These are topics she would delve into further down the line.
