WHY YOU SHOULD LEARN FREECAD ? A BRIEF REVIEW

Posted on August 1, 2019August 20, 2019 by curiosity
FreeCAD design environment (Copied from the project GitHub page)

Are you a fan of the FreeCAD ? An opensource parametric 3D modelling software,
with which you can design, analyze, simulate and build machines and structures.

Originally it was meant for Mechanical 3D CAD, the scalable and generic software
structure made it easy to build upon. People start building small and medium
‘Workbenches’ for their 3D or related applications. Later those ‘Workbenches’
became more popular and more contributions came in. Now it has a good shining
feature list in its official releases. A user can choose helpful ‘Addons’ from
its long list. Thanks to all the people who worked behind each corner of the
software.

I was a Solidworks professional when I tried FreeCAD for the first time. it was
FC14, the only reason I started working on it that, I was not liable to anyone
for using the software. I need to make some models for personal as well as some
freelance jobs. FC shown me the way I could rethink the way of modelling and
assembling the parts. In solidworks or similar packages it is becoming less hard
year after year, Where I was loosing the point where I can make the entire model
in mind and using the software to visualize it.

So I was attracted to FC and later on I found myself finding out new ways to
make things work, with the available tools. I was so happy that; recently a fine
assembly workbench was available as Addon. Nothing more is required for me now.

See the list which you can refer as the advantages I found in using FreeCAD for
personal as well as commercial works.

 * No money to buy/use, develop things and sell them
 * Dozens of add-ons, with which one can customize the design workbench
 * Learning curve is steep, but anyway learn-able
 * Good for intermediate and professional users
 * Low in size on disk as well as on memory (I can even use it on my netbook,
with 2gb ram and atom processor)
 * Universal 3D and 2D file formats supported (IGES, STEP, STL, DXF, SVG, DWG,
   PDF etc)
 * Analysis workbenches available as add-ons (Openfoam, and FEA work benches are
   awesome in terms of usage)
 * For mechanical engineers : Sketcher  –  Part Design  –  A2P(Assembly)  –
   TechDraw(Drafting)   –  FEA  –  OF(OpenFOAM) Workbenches are very useful

Try it out, you deserve freedom than features.

[…] I am totally fascinated by the humble opensource project FreeCAD. As a
mechanical design engineer I am enjoying the freedom I can have with this 3D
modelling package. You can get some basic information about FreeCAD through
    my older post. […]
