ALASKA BAR BY THE NUMBERS IN 2022:

 * Managed 4,716 total members, including 2,268 active in-state members.
 * Provided pro bono help to 345 Alaskans via Martin Luther King Day of Service
   and Alaska Free Legal Answers.
 * Processed 181 grievances against attorneys.
 * Provided 26 CLE programs, including 15 free of charge.
 * Admitted 138 new members via Bar Exam, UBE transfers, and reciprocity.
 * Provided 2,311 lawyer referrals to the community.

Why is it mandatory to join the Alaska Bar Association?

Alaska Statute As 08.08, Alaska Integrated Bar Act, created the Bar and requires
every person licensed to practice law in the state become a Bar member.  It
specifically states: “There is created an instrumentality of the state known as
the Alaska Bar Association, referred to in this chapter as the Alaska Bar.” 

What are my bar dues going towards?

Active dues for 2023 is $660.  The dues amount can be broken down into the
following amounts:

 * Discipline: $259, Administration: $204, CLE: $61, Pro Bono: $36, Fee
   Arbitration: $24, BOG: $20, Lawyer Referral: $14, MCLE: $11, LFCP: $10,
   Fastcase: $7, Bar Rag: $6, Web Page: $4, Sections: $2, MLK Day: $1,
   Committees: $1

What MCLE's are required?

Bar Rule 65 requires all Bar members to engage in Mandatory Ethics Continuing
Legal Education (MECLE). Every active member of the Alaska Bar Association shall
complete at least three credit hours per year of approved MECLE.

How do I change my status?

In order to transfer your status you must submit an affidavit to the Alaska Bar
Association.  Links to the affidavit and additional requirements are available

What does the Alaska Bar Association do?

The mission of the Alaska Bar Association is to: (1) regulate the practice of
law; (2) promote reform in the law and in judicial procedure; (3) facilitate the
administration of justice; (4) encourage continuing legal education for the
membership; and (5) increase the public service and efficiency of the Bar.  For

I have a dispute with my lawyer, can you help?

The Alaska Bar Association has processes in place for you to file a complaint
against attorneys and fee disputes on our discipline page here.

Can you help me find a lawyer?

The Alaska Lawyer Referral Service is made up of Alaska lawyers who have signed
up to be listed on the Lawyer Referral Service.  More information on the lawyer
referral service is available here.

I can't afford an attorney, what do I do?

The Alaska Bar Association has information on Pro Bono legal service providers
here.

Can you help me find a legal speaker for my class?

The Law Related Education Committee develops and participates in various
programs for teachers, students and the public to provide education about civic
responsibilities, the law, the courts, and the legal system.  If you would like
to set up a speaker for your class or organization contact the Committee
at info@alaskabar.org.
