DICKENSON CHAPTER CONTACT US Staten Island Ferry Spirit of America ABOUT US The Staten Island Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (SIAAHGS) – The Richard B. Dickenson Chapter is a 501 C (3) membership organization open to the public. Regular meetings are held on the third Saturday of each month (except in July and August) at the Staten Island Museum. The chapter provides a monthly forum for people who are just beginning to research their African (African-American, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-European) diaspora family histories as well as those who have already gathered information going back many generations. Geographically our members are not solely focused on Staten Island’s African-American genealogy and history, in fact, they have research interests that span the African diaspora. Formally installed by the national AAHGS, Inc. (headquartered in Washington, D.C.) in February 2018, The Richard B. Dickenson Chapter is one of 36 chapters across the nation. AAHGS, Inc. has more than a forty-year history of promoting research, discovery and writing about African- American genealogy and history. AAHGS strives to preserve African-ancestored family history, genealogy, and cultural diversity by teaching research techniques and disseminating information. THE SIAAHGS MISSION IS TO: Provide a forum for the research, discussion and writing of genealogical and historical topics of interest; Advance the understanding of African-American genealogy and history; and Honor the life and work of the late Staten Island Borough Historian Richard B. Dickenson. ABOUT RICHARD B. DICKENSON Dick Dickenson was The Staten Island Borough Historian from 1991 until his death in 2006. A true scholar and a gentleman, Mr. Dickenson was a community activist, historian, humanitarian and a friend and colleague to many. Among his many contributions, Mr. Dickenson served on Community Board 1, was historian for the Snug Harbor East Civic Association, was the founder of The Friends of Staten Island Abandoned Cemeteries and was a member of the New Jersey Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (NJAAHGS). He did extensive research on Staten Island’s history including the Island’s black community authoring a revised edition of Holden’s Staten Island: The History of Richmond County and Census Occupations of Afro-American Families on Staten Island, 1840-1875, among other works. Mr. Dickenson also researched southwestern Virginia and authored Entitled! Free Papers in Appalachia Concerning Antebellum Freeborn Negroes and Emancipated Blacks of Montgomery County, Virginia. He was an easy-going person who took great interest in others personal stories in the context of local history. The Staten Island Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society is named in his honor with the hope that his memory and work will live on.
