Die-cutting, or the act of cutting out shapes with dies, has a long history
dating back to the mid-1800s. According to Colvin Friedman, die cutting began as
a technique to "cut leather more effectively for the shoe industry." Making
shoes back then was incredibly labor-intensive and time-consuming since the
holes in the leather had to be painstakingly punched by hand.
