Attending a support group / session can provide you with a chance to be with people who have a common purpose and are likely to understand one another. A professional facilitates as you share your thoughts with peers. As COVID-19 creates challenges in our world, continued recovery becomes more difficult to implement in our day-to-day lives. Jewish Family Service Houston's (JFS) structured support groups focus on providing knowledge and tools to improve your coping skills and ability to self-care. See Current Groups/Sessions COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT SUPPORT GROUPS/SESSIONS What is a support group? Support groups are designed to provide a safe and supportive environment for participants to connect, learn, comfort, support and socialize to promote our psychological health. All support sessions are facilitated by a rotation of licensed clinicians or master’s level clinical intern students under supervision. What is the difference between a support group and counseling? Counseling is an individualized process in which a trained clinician collaboratively determines therapeutic goals based on the presenting needs of the individual. Support groups are peer supportive environments that are intended to provide connection and promote well-being for people with challenging life situations. What support group should I join? How do I know if I can attend a support group? Our support groups are organized by age, stage in life, common experience and other factors. The details of the group can be found with each group description. Take a look to see which experience you identify with and want to take part in with others. Can I bring a friend or family member? If the person you’d like to bring shares a commonality with the group, they are welcome to come! Often those in our lives may be experiencing the same things we’d like to cope with. We prefer that those who join our groups stick with them for the entirety of the sessions, so consider if you and your friend or family member would like to commit to the recurring group experience.
