FIND THE INFORMATION YOU NEED

Public Records laws keep you safe, and they make things easier to keep
everything about you in one place. There’s no need to worry about you never
getting a birth certificate again, or a copy of a death certificate for funeral
arrangements.

Public records are just that—public. They’re not confidential or hidden, and if
you ever want a copy of anything yours, like those certificates I mentioned or
even a marriage record, then it’s yours if you ask for it.

These records weren’t always available. It wasn’t until President Lyndon Johnson
that the Freedom of Information Act of 1966 was passed, and the government had
to disclose a person’s records to the general population.

Before, your records wouldn’t have been impossible to get, but it would’ve been
hard, where as now, you can just get some of them online right here. (And that’s
just one option.)

You can look at any public record. These public records include criminal
records, court dockets, sex offender registry files, voter registration, and
more. Some public records are available on the Internet (though not many people
know how to access them) but some can only be obtained in person.

Despite being under the Freedom of Information Act, not all records are public.
Also, all 50 states abide under this Act, but the states’ laws still vary as to
what can be open and what can be restricted. Some states have very easy access
whereas others are more restrictive.

Most laws are different in small details, but those differences are there.
Another example—some states allow death certificates to be obtained by anyone,
whereas some states only allow family members or legal representation to get
those certificates.

Though public records are now digitized and online, before you would have to go
to a courthouse and file a request in order to access a public record. Things
have come a long way since then.

Don’t worry, though, some things are automatically sealed. Records such as
anything between you and a psychologist, or you and a physician or surgeon are
records that are automatically sealed by statute. Also, records about you are
available to you only, unless you give consent for them to be available to
somebody else.

Sometimes, when it comes to court records, a judge can decide that he or she or
they want a certain part of the file sealed and have the rest available for the
public.

I guess that your biggest question may be—“Why do public records matter to me?
I’m not a lawyer or a part of the government.” Well, that may be so, but you can
still look online to, for example, make sure that you’re safe.

You can access public records to find criminal records, to do background checks,
or to make sure that there isn’t a sex offender on your street. If you want to
