This sweet potato casserole with marshmallows toes the line between side dish
and dessert — and we wouldn't have it any other way. Pureed sweet potatoes are
blended with sugar and spices, then topped with marshmallows and baked to sweet,
gooey perfection.

SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE INGREDIENTS

Here's what you'll need to make this top-rated sweet potato casserole with
marshmallows:

 * Sweet Potatoes: You'll need about five sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced.
 * Brown Sugar: Brown sugar is essential to the cozy, toasty, warmth we're after
when we make sweet potato casserole. Use light for a milder flavor or dark
   for a more intense flavor.
 * Margarine: This recipe calls for reduced-fat margarine, but you can
substitute regular butter if that's what you have on hand.
 * Orange Juice: Three tablespoons of orange juice gives this sweet potato
   casserole subtle brightness.
 * Cinnamon: Just a pinch of cinnamon adds warmth and brings out the other
   flavors.
 * Marshmallows: Of course, you'll need a bag of miniature marshmallows (they'll
be the star of the show, after all).

HOW TO MAKE SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE WITH MARSHMALLOWS

You'll find the full, step-by-step recipe below — but here's a brief overview of
what you can expect when you make this sweet potato casserole with marshmallows:

 1. Cook and mash the sweet potatoes: Place the peeled and cubed sweet potatoes
in a saucepan and cover with water. Cook over medium-high heat until tender,
then drain and mash with a potato masher.
 2. Mix and top the casserole: Use an electric mixer to mix the mashed (and
cooled) sweet potatoes, brown sugar, margarine, cinnamon, and orange juice.
Pour the mixture into a baking dish. Top with marshmallows.
 3. Bake the casserole: Bake in a preheated oven until the marshmallows are
puffed and lightly browned, about half an hour.

HOW TO STORE SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE WITH MARSHMALLOWS

Store your leftover sweet potato casserole in a shallow, airtight container in
the fridge for up to four days. Reheat gently in the microwave or in the oven.

CAN YOU FREEZE SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE WITH MARSHMALLOWS?

Yes! We recommend freezing this casserole before baking and without the
marshmallows (you can add those later).

Prepare the filling according to the recipe and pour it into a foil baking dish.
Wrap the dish tightly in foil and freeze for up to three months. Thaw in the
refrigerator overnight. Top with marshmallows and baking according to the
directions.

ALLRECIPES COMMUNITY TIPS AND PRAISE

"Made this last year and it was delicious," says Kathy. "So easy to do and can
be made the day before. Just add the marshmallows and bake and serve. Easy,
simple, and a great hit. Doing it again this year!!"

"Fabulous," raves TUCCI013. "It was a bit different from the sweet potato
casserole of my childhood: I wasn't accustomed to the OJ, but I found it to be
the perfect addition. I added a layer of pecans and brown sugar under the
marshmallows — YUM!"

"This recipe is amazing," according to anne365. "Definitely a keeper, although I
did make one slight change: I didn't have any orange juice on hand, so I used
about a teaspoon of fresh lemon juice instead."

I took a gamble and made this for Thanksgiving without "testing" the recipe
first, and am happy I did. This is such yummy sweet potato casserole! I doubt
I'll try another recipe again, this one was perfect! I added a little more brown
sugar, so it was like a dessert. A little tip is that if you stir in a cup of
mini marshmallows before putting this in the baking dish and stir them around a
little you have marshmallow surprises throughout the casserole and not just on
top. Thanks for this recipe!

This was ok. Nothing crazy and will probably not make it again unless I have all
of my nephews/nieces over for Thanksgiving. Didn't make any changes to the
recipe. I wasn't sure what the right amount was for 5 potatoes as they clearly
vary in size. I had 5 huge ones but only ended up using 4. Also, I used a 9x9
dish and the recipe roughly filled it about 2.5 inches high (without the
topping).

This was a nifty recipe & was easy enough too!We baked our sweet potatoes on the
grill with the ham & had baked sweet potatoes on Thursday - just immediate
family & then on Friday we did the family thing & everyone enjoyed it! The OJ
was a nice add too - got compliments - next time I will add some roasted
pecans... Thanks for posting this to share!

This dish is always a hit during the holidays! I tweaked it a bit to season as
my mother does, but used this as a guide. I used my Ninja and add all the
ingredients there to blend, which made it very easy. One thing I added this time
was salted caramel marshmallows. They were amazing! When the marshmallows
heated, the salted caramel added a wonderful flavor to the dish.

This recipe came out extremely watery. I followed all of the directions and it
was extremely watery. You can also taste the orange juice. If you want the
flavor of marshmallows, orange juice, and sweet potatoes all together, this is
the recipe for you.

I made this for a school potluck for thanksgiving. So many kids rated this the
best dish on the table. And even the moms asked me for the recipe. I didn’t
change anything but since “5 sweet potatoes” is kind of hard to gauge without
knowing the actual weight, I just tried with 5 medium sweet potatoes & taste it
before laying the marshmallows. It’s was perfect sweetness.

YUM! I made this today for thanksgiving lunch. It was superb. I only made 3
sweet potatoes and adjusted the ingredients. I microwaved them instead of
boiling them -it reduces the amount of water in them and makes a denser purée. I
sprinkled some coarsely ground pecans and some brown sugar on top before adding
the marshmallows, as another reviewer suggested. We loved it. I had it as a side
dish, and my husband had it as a dessert. Either way it is delicious.

Pretty good! I think I’ll add a little more butter and some salt, maybe some
nutmeg next time. I used the broiler and literally watched the marshmallows
until they puffed and browned before moving it down a rack and baking normally.
Developed a lovely crunch with the creme brûlée sort of skin to them.

I always make these every Thanksgiving and I also add rings of pineapple and
maraschino cherries to the top. Very delicious. Happy Thanksgiving 🦃🌹
