VALENTIA ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE

Embrace the rugged and exposed elements of the southwest coast and gain an
understanding of what life was like for a lightkeeper and their families on
Valentia Island. Located in one of the most scenic points on the edge of Europe,
Valentia Lighthouse is home to the most westerly harbour light on mainland
Ireland. This light guides vessels from the sea and leads them through the
northern entrance of Valentia Harbour and up past Harbour Rock.

EIGHTH WONDER AT THE VALENTIA TRANSATLANTIC CABLE STATION

Over 150 years ago, the first successful transatlantic telegraph cable was laid
between Valentia Island in Ireland and Heart's Content in Newfoundland, Canada,
connecting the Old World with the new World. The wire that changed the world,
the Eighth Wonder of the World, reduced the time to send a message across the
ocean from weeks to minutes and heralded the birth of global communications. The
laying of the Transatlantic Cable is a story of human endurance, science,
adventure and genius and is told in the immersive visitor experience at the
Valentia Cable Station. Listen to the entrepreneur Cyrus Field I and the Knight
of Kerry regale about their adventure, try to send your own morse code message
and try to break the code, learn about the underwater cables of today and how
communications technology has changed.

Opening Hours: April to October, Wednesday to Sunday 10:00 am to 5:30 pm (last
entry at 5:00 pm). Mondays and Tuesdays - Closed.

Please note there is no parking available on the Cable Station premises. Parking
is available 200 meters before the Cable Station Building across from the Church
of Immaculate Conception.

has got a calm beach in a tiny town. Drive around here is beautiful.

Great place to visit if your a cyclist & like Strava. Some steep hills to suffer
up. Rewarding views at the tops of them

A beautiful island with beautiful villages and sights to see. It has a very
ultimate weather. The cliff and sight seeing you can see here is overwhelming.

Extremely beautiful western end of Europe. Pretty green everywhere you look and
the sea is a little tough. Tetrapod tracks and ferry ride with lighthouse are
some places to visit. There’s a bridge that joins to the mainland at Portmagee.
