2017: A HOARD OF SILVER COINS OF HISTRIA FROM REZENI VILLAGE (IN RUSSIAN WITH
ENGLISH SUMMARY) → КЛА...

January 2017
 * Denis Topal
 * Mikhail Choref
 * V.S. Sinika

The article introduces a new hoard of silver coins of Histria discovered
occasionally in 2014 near Rezeni village in the Republic of Moldova (Ialoveni
district). The time of its deposition could be assumed as the 3rd quarter of the
3rd century BC. This hoard (as many others from Durleşti, Stolniceni, Doroţcaia)
is definetely connected with Getian settlements. Basing on the chronology of
these ... [Show full abstract] hoards the authors see no grounds to state that
the Getian settlements of the Moldavian foreststeppe region ceased functioning
in the last quarter -The end of the 4th century BC. It is obvious that the life
of these sites continued even in the 3rd century BC. The discovery of silver
drachmas of Histria from the hoard found at Nikonion (similar to those found
near the Getian settlements) allows us to raise the upper date of this Greek
city by 25 years -To the 3rd quarter of the 3rd century BC. An overview of the
hoards with silver coins of Histria indicates that the period of their
deposition (last quarter of 4th - 3rd century BC) was the time of the highly
developed commodity-money relations. And the fact of the abundance of drachmas
with "A" monogram indicates that the bulk of the Histrian coins came to the
North-Western Black Sea Region during the period of the activity of this
anonymous magistrate.

THE MINTING OF PLATINUM ROUBLES

July 2004 · Platinum Metals Review
 * David B. Willey
 * Allin S. Pratt

It is not known for certain how four platinum roubles came to be in Johnson
Matthey's possession. There is rumour that, at the end of World War I, A. B.
Coussmaker of Johnson Matthey, negotiated with the White Russians to smuggle out
of Russia a hoard of coins which had been withdrawn by the government years
before. The hoard was reputed to be on a train to the West when the Reds caught
up with ... [Show full abstract] it. Rather than stop the transaction, they
thought it a good idea as it would raise capital for them - at that time, the
refining capacity of the young U. S. S. R. had been disrupted. So they took over
the deal and let the consignment continue its journey to Johnson Matthey where
it was refined and the platinum sold on their behalf. However, this is
speculation (1). Eye witnesses state that two roubles were definitely in the
company's possession in 1956, and that two more came from the desk of Dr Leslie
B. Hunt, the founder of this Journal (1). The roubles have thus been in Johnson
Matthey's possession for almost 50 years and probably for longer. More likely to
be true is a brief note in a typewritten statement in the possession of Johnson
Matthey, stating no more than "the specimens formed part of a consignment sent
to Johnson Matthey for refining about 1870" (2). As there is always interest in
platinum coins and particularly in Russian roubles which were the first platinum
coins to be minted, it was decided to investigate the metal content of the
Johnson Matthey roubles to find if they conformed to recognised Russian roubles
- or were forgeries.
