FAQ

Don’t you need to see my dog in-person? Why is this done remotely?

Training remotely ensures that I can observe your dog’s behaviour and body
language without my presence affecting the dynamic of the situation. It’s
difficult for in-person separation anxiety training to be successful because
just me being there changes your dog’s mood and behaviour. I need to see (by
video call) what your everyday life is like with your dog. I need to see exactly
how they typically react when you get up and leave. The goal of the training is
for your dog to be ok alone. Having a “guest” over changes everything.

Another reason is, if ‘alone training’ only happens when I’m present, your dog
will quickly catch on to a rehearsed absence vs. a real-life absence, and the
training will not be successful. The “trainer effect” is a very real phenomenon
where a dog will show progress in the presence of the trainer but lapse back
into their habits when the trainer is not around. Remote sessions help avoid
this scenario.

All certified Separation Anxiety specialists do the training remotely.

Won’t my dog just get used to my absences after a while?

No, not if your dog truly has separation anxiety. Dogs with separation anxiety
are worried that their important person is leaving and we cannot verbally
communicate to them that they will be fine. We know they are safe, but they do
not feel safe. So, we slowly desensitize them to their person’s absences so they
can learn over time that they truly are safe when alone.

How long will I need to work you to see results?

All dogs are individuals so their response to the exercises and speed at which
they progress is also individual. Applying an evidenced-based practice such as
desensitization, means that you will be on the best path moving forward with
your training. Slow and steady progress is what we are after.

Does my dog need behaviour medication to help with their anxiety?

There are many medication options to help anxious dogs. Medication can greatly
improve the efficacy, speed, and success of the training and I encourage all my
clients to speak to their vet to see if medication is right for their dog.

What happens after I sign up?

You’ll be directed to the coaching program portal. The portal contains
everything you need for the program and you’ll have lifetime access. After the
assessment call I’ll get you all set up with your own google drive folder which
we’ll use for the training plans and videos, etc.
