MAN WHO THREATENED SIGRID KAAG WITH DEATH SENTENCED TO PRISON

The 43-year-old Erik van Z. was sentenced on Tuesday by the police judge to five
months in prison, two of which were conditional, for his death threats against
D66 leader Sigrid Kaag. Earlier, he also threatened caretaker Minister of Health
Hugo de Jong with death.

The 43-year-old Erik van Z. was sentenced on Tuesday by the police judge to five
months in prison, two of which were conditional, for his death threats against
D66 leader Sigrid Kaag.

Earlier, he also threatened caretaker Minister of Health Hugo de Jong with
death.

"I hereby inform you that I am going to attack Sigrid Kaag before midnight
tonight and injure her in such a way that she is either dead or can never
perform her function again," the man wrote on Facebook on September 30 under the
profile name X.

More than a week ago, the Dutchman living in Spain was arrested during a visit
to the Netherlands.

He's been stuck ever since.

Van Z. says that he does not agree with the corona measures.

On Tuesday afternoon, Kaag attended a hearing of the police judge at the court
in The Hague and made use of her right to speak.

The public prosecutor had demanded a four-month prison sentence against Van Z.

"I just did it in a fit of anger. It was impulsive and I am deeply ashamed of
it," Van Z told the judge.

"I didn't think about it. I typed it in ten seconds and now I'm here. I'm not a
teenager anymore. I should have thought about it more, especially now that I
know what it's all about."

'IT MADE ME QUIET'

Kaag said about the threatening Facebook message for which Van Z. is on trial:
"It made me silent. I was really devastated and I felt the fear it must instill.
How safe am I, how safe are my husband and children?"

She said to the suspect, "I don't know you. Why the desire to end someone else's
life?"

Kaag said she regularly reads hateful comments on social media.

She wants to break this pattern.

"Now I look up to the threatening letters. I am afraid to open the mail. It is
no longer possible to walk the dogs without any worries."

Kaag is also concerned about her loved ones and said that the children no longer
dare to come home "because the house is no longer a safe place because of their
mother's job".
