Tenant Vamabeban Sinnathurai's apartment is full of cockroaches. ((CBC))The city
of Montreal said some problems are being addressed in a vermin-infested
Côte-des-Neiges apartment complex 48 hours after its owner was served an
official warning by the city.

But officials said there is still a great deal of work to be done in the
buildings at 4837 and 4855 Vézina St..

On Friday, borough officials said they warned the building’s owner, Robert
Sebag, that he must hire an exterminator, begin work to remove asbestos and
install a security system in the front lobby.

Unless Sebag complied with the order, officials said the city would complete the
work and put a lien on the building for the value of the work.

But a few hours before the deadline Monday morning, officials said workers were
removing asbestos from the building.

The workers were also repairing the front door, which was smashed by vandals
over the weekend.

"We’re glad obviously Mr Sebag [is obeying] the order that we sent last week,"
said Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough director of communications
Michel Therrien.

Therrien said officials had also learned that Sebag had a long-term contract
with an extermination company.

"So instead of paying twice, what we are trying to do is get in touch with that
company … and force them to do the job," Therrien said.

Therrien said it seemed heating problems inside the building may also have been
addressed.

"We took some measurements and the heating seems to be fine," Therrien said.
"But we realize it is a pretty warm day today … [we’re] gonna check that
situation see how it evolves."

Tenant Vamabeban Sinnathurai said he and his family plan to move out of the
building if the problems are not addressed by the new year. ((CBC))

He said any repairs not completed within another 48 hours would be done by the
city at Sebag’s expense.

TENANTS FRUSTRATED

So far, Therrien said four tenants have taken the city up on an offer to help
them find a new place to live.

A community group has offered to buy the building in January if the asbestos
removal has been completed.

Workers said that work should be completed within five days.

Tenant Vamabeban Sinnathurai said the city’s intervention is encouraging.

Water leaking from the ceiling of the apartment he shares with his wife and two
young children for at least six months, Sinnaturai said.

"I call them many times but they say come tomorrow, come tomorrow, but they
don’t come yet," Sinnaturai said. "We have too much cockroach and mouse. No
heater."

"Sometimes it goes in the food, my children … [are] scared," Sinnaturai said.

Unless the ongoing problems are resolved by the new year, Sinnaturai said he
plans to move out.
