In 1991, the late Bob Gass, author of the UCB Word For Today, visited Romania
during the devastating Romanian orphan crisis. At that time, an estimated
250,000 orphaned children lived in overcrowded and underfunded state-run
orphanages. Moved by the appalling conditions - children crammed six or eight
into a single cot - Bob and his wife, Debby, knew they had to help.

After several years of working with a charity to send aid to Romania, Bob and
Debby decided to establish their own children's home in Romania. They founded
The Village of Hope in Dorobantu—a sanctuary and place of hope for children
rescued from these dire situations.

In the early 2000s, Bob and Debby partnered with Mariana Petersel, a Romanian
advocate for vulnerable and at-risk children. Mariana’s non-profit organisation,
Generatie Tanara Romania, was already making a difference, so this partnership
was a natural fit. Today, Mariana continues as the Executive Director of The
Village of Hope Romania.

Over the past 33 years, more than 5,800 children’s lives have been transformed
by this incredible work. Currently, The Village of Hope is helping 220 children
every month in Romania’s poorest rural areas by providing care packages filled
with food, clothing, hygiene items, medical supplies, and school supplies. This
number continues to grow.

Q: How is UCB connected to The Village of Hope Romania?

A: For 30 years, UCB has partnered with Bob and Debby Gass to share the UCB Word
For Today devotional. Following Bob’s passing in 2019, Debby has worked
tirelessly to continue his legacy—not only through his writings but also through
their ongoing commitment to helping vulnerable children in Romania. In 2023, UCB
celebrated its first Village of Hope Day on UCB 1 and UCB 2, raising over
£30,000 thanks to the generosity of UCB listeners. Every penny went directly to
support the work of The Village of Hope. UCB is thrilled to continue this
partnership in 2024, working alongside Debby and the team to make a lasting
difference for some of Europe’s most vulnerable children.

A: On Friday 6th December 2024, UCB will host a special day celebrating the
