MONTREAL: A truly extraordinary Canadian Grand Prix, lasting almost four hours
due to torrential rain and five safety cars, ended in dramatic fashion, with
Jenson Button - having pitted six times during the race - coming through on the
final lap for victory.

The McLaren driver shrugged off a collision with his teammate, Lewis Hamilton,
to take his first victory since April last year from Red Bull's Sebastian
Vettel, who nevertheless extended his lead in the drivers' championship to 60
points. Vettel's teammate, Mark Webber, held off a resurgent Michael Schumacher
to take third. ''What a race. What a race. A fantastic win,'' Button screamed as
he crossed the line.

Lewis Hamilton again causes controversy as his teammate Jensen Button wins the
Canadian Grand Prix on the last lap.

Vettel now has 161 points in the overall championship, ahead of Button (101) and
Webber (94).

It was forecast to be wet and wild but no one realised just how wet and wild it
would be. As boats floated down the St Lawrence River in the background -
showing the cars how it was done - the island track became a floating fun house.

Prix.Credit: Getty Images

A carnival atmosphere prevailed. The cars, which had been red-flagged after 25
laps of mayhem, were covered in tarpaulins on the grid. FIA's race director
Charlie Whiting opted to start the race behind a safety car, which meant
everyone had to begin on wets.

And while Vettel held off the Ferrari of Fernando Alonso at the front, Hamilton,
almost inevitably given his record this season, was at the centre of things. A
tangle while attempting to pass Red Bull's Webber on lap five, which spun the
Australian and led to both men losing places, prompted an investigation by the
stewards although neither man was punished. Webber later said he was
''surprised'' at Hamilton's move given how long there was left in the race.
Hamilton then tried, optimistically, to go around the outside of Schumacher's
Mercedes at the hairpin but ended up losing sixth place to Button.

In a desperate attempt to reclaim that position, Hamilton took advantage of a
mistake by his teammate as they exited the final chicane before the start of lap
eight. Hamilton moved up the inside, down the pit straight, but Button -
apparently unsighted due to the heavy rain and spray - did not see him and moved
across on to the racing line, pushing Hamilton into the pit wall and out of the
race.

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh defended both drivers and the decision
to allow them to race each other. ''Jenson didn't know he was there and Lewis
was trying to make good progress,'' he said. ''There's no issue. People may
criticise but this is the way we run our team.''

The incident with Hamilton and Button led to another safety car period but as
the rain started falling harder and harder - building into a veritable monsoon -
it became obvious the race would have to be red-flagged. It was over two hours
before the cars re-emerged from the pit lane, once again behind the safety car.

Webber said afterwards: ''Everything was thrown in there today, it was a tough
grand prix for all of us. Clearly it's Jenson's day. I'm sure it was a good race
for the neutrals watching at home but a few grey hairs for us.''
