SUSTAINABILITY SIMPLIFIED

ARCELORMITTAL’S MULTI PART INTEGRATION™ (MPI) CONCEPT ALLOWS MULTIPLE VEHICLE
COMPONENTS TO BE INTEGRATED INTO ONE LARGE LASER WELDED BLANK. IT IS ONE OF THE
MOST COST-EFFECTIVE WAYS FOR CARMAKERS TO DEVELOP AND DEPLOY SUSTAINABLE
MOBILITY SOLUTIONS WHILE SIMPLIFYING VEHICLE DESIGN AND PRODUCTION.

MPI demonstrates ArcelorMittal’s deep understanding of the changing landscape in
the automotive industry. This includes the introduction of different powertrain
technologies and the need for adaptable, modular solutions. Automakers can use
MPI to efficiently streamline production, reduce costs, and adapt to evolving
industry needs.

MPI parts still meet all relevant safety requirements as the most advanced high
strength steels are used in the right thickness and ductility – in the right
place. ArcelorMittal has already developed a range of MPI solutions and all of
them have been validated against international vehicle crash standards.

The possibilities to simplify vehicle manufacturing with ArcelorMittal’s Multi
Part Integration™ (MPI) are endless.

Simplifying design and production helps to make mobility more sustainable.
Vehicles are easier to produce, less steel is required, and MPI parts can be
applied across different powertrain platforms. This leads to savings in time,
mass, costs, and emissions.

Let’s take the rear chassis H-frame solution as an example. Using MPI to produce
the H-frame reduces the number of parts from 11 to 1. That eliminates 80 spot
welds on the assembly line, accelerating production. Mass is also reduced
significantly – up to 15-percent per H-frame.

Improving nesting during the cutting process reduces the amount of steel
initially required. This has a corresponding reduction on CO2-equivalent
emissions and highlights the sustainability benefits of using less material in
automotive design and production.

Cost is another area where savings are found with MPI. The savings mentioned
above lead to a 10-percent reduction in the cost of an H-frame. And the
investment required to produce that part is around 18-percent lower.

ArcelorMittal’s double door ring

ArcelorMittal started with a single door ring, but the MPI principal has been
applied to other components including: double door rings, floor reinforcements,
dash panels, rear floor panels… the possibilities are endless. Vehicles with MPI
parts are already on the roads of Asia, Europe, and North America. In each case,
ArcelorMittal’s Global R&D team worked with the OEM’s design team to finalise
the part’s design and material selection.

There is no revolutionary material or process – just simplification. And it can
be applied today, also thanks to the close cooperation with the entire supply
chain.
