Rapidly developing cities around the world must find models for density that allow them to grow and thrive. Carlow spent over a decade documenting and analyzing the architecture and urbanism of Hong Kong, a city that hosts some of the most intense built environments on the planet. The city’s urbanization has produced unparalleled living conditions in terms of scale and density. As a socio-political microcosm, Hong Kong has been dealing with the impacts of hyper-dense urban environments since the mid-twentieth century. Due to lack of space, topographical constraints, political conditions, and extremely high population density, the city has become an incubator for the development of high rise architecture for high density living. Carlow will share work from his teaching, research and his recent book, Cities of Repetition, that offer strategies for density, urban compactness and carbon conscious development for the decades ahead.
