First one I found was during a challenge race, and second one was at the end of a faction mission. Force quit the game and install d3dcompiler_47 via protontricks. After that the game should just run from Steam with no issues. I didn't have to add the -dx11 flag or install any other components via protontricks that some other reports mention. That being said, I was just focusing on getting the game running and didn't play very much after a few minutes to verify things were working so there may be stability issues. I was playing with the Steam Deck docked to a monitor usinga mouse and keyboard so I didn't have to remap any controls. Something to note is that occasionally the game seems to overwrite a required file. After exiting the game and re-verifying files, it will sometimes note that 1 file needs to be redownloaded. It doesn't seem to affect anything but if the game fails to launch, try re-verifying the files. The game starts with Blackscreen with normal Proton but using Protontricks and the DLLs that are necessary to work it fixes the issues, so i would say this game runs perfect, it's just the DLLs that gives a headache to everyone else. Whilst searching the web i stumbled on this solution by u/Twisked which worked perfectly: install the latest version of Proton, anything after 7-24 should be fine, (others on this thread have given instructions on how to do this) Then go to the just cause starup screen and before clicking on the start icon, go into the settings 'cog' icon and click compatability and set it to your latest Proton you just installed. Then whilst still in the settings, click on the Properties tab on the left, go into local files and click 'verify integrity of game files' Let it run through this and you should see an error with one file, when it appears to finish press B to go back and start the game and you should now find it runs perfectly. Then if this did not work. -Install Protontricks and open it. -Select the game "Just Cause 2", then click on "Select the default wineprefix", then on "Install a Windows DLL or component" and locate the following. -"d3dx10" "d3dcompiler_43" and "d3dcompiler_47" -Install those (I think you can also do it by typing ""protontricks 8190 d3dx10 d3dcompiler_43 d3dcompiler_47"). This worked to open the game correctly, but then it crashed on loading screen. Here's how I fixed it: -Enter on "Advanced Display Settings". -Disable "Decals". -Disable "Bokeh Filter" if it's available for you. Then when I tried to move the mouse in-game, the FPS's went terribly down. From 60 to 10 or lower. The game ran fine while I was not moving the mouse, so it was kind of unplayable. -Fixed it lowering the DPI levels. Just Cause 2 definitely runs terrible on Linux, this is how I managed tu play it but it took me much more hours than it should have. Then if this did not work. -Install Protontricks and open it. -Select the game "Just Cause 2", then click on "Select the default wineprefix", then on "Install a Windows DLL or component" and locate the following. -"d3dx10" "d3dcompiler_43" and "d3dcompiler_47" -Install those (I think you can also do it by typing ""protontricks 8190 d3dx10 d3dcompiler_43 d3dcompiler_47"). Without -dx11, you will experience very frequest freezing/crashes in my experience (IE: every 30 minutes or so). I was able to play a new save file from start to finish with these settings with only a few crashes total in 40 hours. In-game Borderless Windowed works, but with a few rows of black at the bottom of the display when it's enabled. In-game framerate cap does not work, so recommend using stranglevk 60 in launch options to prevent physics bugs. Will noticeably increase load times as a result.
