--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mental health is not just the absence of conditions like depression, anxiety, or
stress. The World Health Organization defines it as a state of well-being in
which every individual realizes their potential, copes with the normal stresses
of life, works productively, and makes contributions to their communities.

Strong mental health can affect how you think, feel, and behave daily. Those who
are mentally healthy have:

a strong sense of contentment

a zest for living and the ability to laugh and have fun

an ability to handle stress and bounce back

a sense of meaning and purpose

flexibility to learn new skills

an adaptable personality

dexterity to build and maintain fulfilling relationships

self-confidence and high self-esteem

Anyone can encounter mental health problems, and many of us do at some point in
our lives. The important thing is to not ignore them, hope they will go away, or
think it's just the way we are.

Here are some tips to bulk up your emotional well-being in some key areas,
courtesy of Helpguide.org:

1. Boost face-to-face interactions. This one may be a challenge if your team
works remotely some or all of the time. However, studies have shown that humans
need positive connections to others and our brains crave companionship.

> Pro Tip: Find a good listener whom you can regularly talk to in person. By “a
> good listener,” we mean someone who won’t interrupt, judge, or tell you what
> you should be feeling.

2. Manage stress. The key to stress is managing it by doing things such as
talking to a friend, listening to a favorite song, scheduling time to play, or
practicing relaxation techniques.

> Pro Tip: Even your nose can help with stress. Find a pleasant scent (maybe
> lavender, gingerbread, or ground coffee) and breathe deeply when you’re
> feeling upset.

3. Brainiac your diet. An unhealthy diet can hurt your brain, mood, sleep, and
energy. Due to our genetics and health factors, everyone responds to foods
differently. Keep an eye on how you feel after you eat something so you’ll know
what to avoid.

> Pro Tip: Foods known to boost mood include nuts, fish rich in Omega-3s,
> avocados, flaxseed, beans, leafy greens, and some fruits.

4. Get some shut-eye. Not getting enough sleep can hurt your mood, energy, and
accuity. Aim for seven to nine hours.

> Pro Tip: Give yourself time to unwind at the end of the day and set your phone
> aside to induce sleep. That social media post can wait until tomorrow!

5. Help others. Whether through engaging work, relationships, volunteering, or
caregiving, find your meaning and purpose in life. Not only will it drive you,
it’ll give you a reason to get out of bed.

> Pro Tip: This isn’t one size fits all. Reflect on how you want to derive
> meaning and purpose in your life and use that as your guide.

Watch: Another tool which can help boost mental health is exercise. In this
video, Dr. Simon Rosenbaum of Australia’s Black Dog Institute elaborates on the
link between exercise and improvements in the symptoms of depression, anxiety,
and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Consider This: Resiliency is key to mental health. Those who are resilient
thrive in difficult situations by maintaining a positive outlook. They remain
focused, flexible, and productive no matter if it's good times or bad. This
resilience also makes them less afraid to try new experiences or fear the
future. It gives them hope.
