EXPERT OPINION BY JOHN HALL, CO-FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT, CALENDAR @JOHNHALL

One element of entrepreneurship that never ceases to amaze me is the continual
nature of the lifestyle. Being a business leader requires a relentless pursuit
of excellence. You can’t rest on past success. You must always look for ways to
adapt and improve — and books are an effective way to do that.

Of course, I know leaders are chronically short on time. You can’t read
everything, which is why I’ve curated a handful of books that are particularly
poignant at the moment.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a business veteran or an aspiring entrepreneur.
These books will leave you with powerful insights, fresh strategies, and proven
methods for success that you can use to take your business to the next level in
the coming months and maintain that success in the years that follow.

1. THE PRIVATE EQUITY PLAYBOOK (SECOND EDITION), BY ADAM COFFEY

Let’s start with something that every business owner can relate to: financials.
It doesn’t matter what stage your business is in or what C-suite position you
occupy. Every leader is involved in the money decisions on some level. This
means you’re probably already aware that sound fiscal policy and clean budgets
and balance sheets are prerequisites for a thriving business.

But what about the higher-level aspects of money management? Did you know that
half of all mergers and acquisitions involve private equity? How do you handle
the partnership with a private equity firm?

This is the theme that Adam Coffey covers in the second edition of his
best-selling book The Private Equity Playbook: Management’s Guide to Working
With Private Equity. The author is a veteran CEO who has led three national
private equity-backed service companies for nine PE sponsors, realizing billions
of dollars and averaging 5X MOIC at exit. This guy has seen it all. He’s managed
dozens of acquisitions and knows what it takes for a private equity partnership
to succeed.

In the book, Coffey uses his expertise to offer actionable insights for anyone
working alongside a private equity firm. It is a useful guide for new
entrepreneurs spending seed money right on up to late-stage funding. If you’re
working with investors, this resource gives you a leg up on handling this unique
and critical relationship.

2. HOW TO HAVE TOUGH CONVERSATIONS, BY AMANDA AND GENE HAMMETT

Change the way you have tough conversations with the strategies presented in How
to Have Tough Conversations. Authors Amanda and Gene Hammett share the key
strategies for having tough conversations when they are most needed. They
provide leaders with direct advice that can be implemented right away. Whether
resolving conflicts or having challenging feedback meetings, readers can expect
to be fully equipped with the tools needed to overcome these conversations
confidently. Leaders no longer need to avoid these types of chats with others;
direct communication is now a priority, and through this, tangible results can
begin to flourish.

3. BUILD THE LIFE YOU WANT, BY ARTHUR C. BROOKS AND OPRAH WINFREY

Building a business is an all-consuming affair. Startups require entrepreneurs
to wear many hats, and growing businesses demand constant attention and
decision-making. As you pour your blood, sweat, and tears into your company,
it’s important to remember to maintain balance and perspective. That’s why the
last book in this punchy list isn’t about mastering team building or
multigenerational workforces. It’s about happiness. How can you reach your goals
and achieve your entrepreneurial vision while still maintaining your happiness?
How can those activities feed one another?

In Build the Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier, social
scientist Arthur C. Brooks and media icon Oprah Winfrey team up to dive into the
science of happiness. They look at cutting-edge data and draw key takeaways that
help you find happiness and fulfillment right where you are, not in some
hypothetical future scenario. As you dream and invest, this book helps you
maintain a critical sense of balance and contentment, which has the subtle side
effect of helping you stay calm, cool, and collected as you guide your business
into the future.

BOOKS TO HELP FOSTER A SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEURIAL EXPERIENCE

There’s no end to business advice out there. However, these three books offer
particularly relevant insights for leaders building businesses in the
post-pandemic landscape. They guide you through key financial relationships,
elite brand-building strategies, and emotional balance and stability, all three
of which are required for true entrepreneurial success.
