CT MANUFACTURER SIKORSKY HAS NEW PLANS FOR AN AIRCRAFT: HYBRID-ELECTRIC,
TILT-WING CONFIGURATION.

Autonomy and electrification will be foundational technologies for Sikorsky next
generation VTOL aircraft.

Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company, unveiled Wednesday “its plan to build, test
and fly a hybrid-electric vertical takeoff and landing demonstrator (HEX / VTOL)
with a tilt-wing configuration,” according to a press release.

Think of a helicopter with its propellers on its wings, and the aircraft is able
to physically tilt its wings for flight.

The decision comes after setbacks experienced by Sikorsky over the last few
years.

The Startford-based helicopter manufacturer had previously lost out on a $1.3
billion contract with the U.S. army back in December of 2022, and decided
against filing a lawsuit in April of 2023. Most recently, the U.S. Army
announced the cancellation of its program to develop an armed scout helicopter
in February of 2024.



The selected design is the first in a planned series of large, next gen VTOL
aircraft, according to the release.

“We never stop innovating at Sikorsky,” said Sikorsky President Paul Lemmo.
“Autonomy and electrification will bring transformational change to flight
safety and operational efficiency of large VTOL aircraft.”

“The HEX program will put a premium on greater than 500 nautical mile range at
high speed, fewer mechanical systems to reduce complexity, and lower maintenance
costs,” according to the release.

The company’s prototyping group Sikorsky Innovations are working with GE
Aerospace to finalize designs on a hybrid-electric power systems with a 600kW
electric motor.
