The bill would cut federal highway funding from areas that permit the use of

House Republican Chuck Edwards has introduced legislation that would prohibit
states and tribes that permit the use of recreational marijuana from receiving
certain federal funding.

“The laws of any government should not infringe on the overall laws of our
nation, and federal funds should not be awarded to jurisdictions that willfully
ignore federal law," Edwards said in a statement.

The legislation would cut 10 percent of federal highway funds from areas that
violate the Controlled Substances Act, which bans recreational marijuana.



Edwards' legislation likely doesn't have much of a chance in Congress, which has
largely let states do what they want on marijuana legalization. Twenty-three
states plus the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana.

Edwards' introduction of the bill comes as the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
will vote on Sept. 7 whether to legalize recreational marijuana on tribal lands.
