AED USA: EQUIPMENT YOU'LL LOVE

At AED USA, we are dedicated to saving the lives of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA)
victims. We supply new, top quality Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and
accessories at affordable prices to organizations and individuals throughout
North America.

From HeartSine to Phillips, Physio-Control, Zoll, Cardiac Science, and
Defibtech, we sell and support all 6 FDA approved AED manufacturers!

Our mission is to create awareness about the ease-of-use and availability of
AEDs, and to increase their availability in public places, workplaces, and
homes. We provide AED Management and Maintenance Compliance programs to protect
AED owners and to ensure that their AEDs are rescue ready when called upon to
save lives.

WHAT IS AN AED MACHINE?

AED is an acronym for Automated External Defibrillator, a portable medical
device that automatically analyzes an abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia) of a
sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) victim and delivers a shock of controlled
electricity to restore an effective rhythm. AEDs are portable, lightweight, and
easy to use. They are the only lifesaving solution available for SCA victims.
Spoken prompts and visual displays guide the first responder step by step
through the lifesaving process of defibrillation. When administered within the
first three to five minutes after SCA strikes, AEDs can significantly improve
the rate of survival for SCA victims.

WHEN WAS THE DEFIBRILLATOR INVENTED?

The first modern portable Automated External Defibrillator was invented in the
mid-1960s by Frank Pantridge in Belfast, Ireland. His first design was powered
by a car battery and weighed 154 pounds (70kgs). In 1968, Pantridge created his
second design which significantly reduced the weight to 6.61 pounds (3kgs).

Although Pantridge created the first modern and portable AED, there is a debate
if his invention was actually the first AED.  Recorded animal experiments date
back to the 18th century to determine the viability of restarting a heart with
electricity.

The first successful human heart defibrillation was performed in 1947 by Claude
Beck on a 14-year-old boy. The 14-year-old patient suffered from ventricular
fibrillation, and was undergoing an 'open-chest' surgery when Dr. Beck restarted
his heart successfully.

'Closed-chest' defibrillation was successfully performed nine years later. Dr.
Beck and his colleagues were directly instrumental in developing Cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation (CPR) techniques in the 1950’s with the Cleveland Heart Society.
These efforts were at the foundation of CPR training for both medical
professionals, first responders as well as lay persons.

HOW DOES A DEFIBRILLATOR WORK?

AEDs are designed to be user-friendly so that they can be successfully used by a
responder with little or no training. A few simple steps are required to
potentially save the life of a victim in sudden cardiac arrest.

Most modern AEDs are equipped with streamlined operations and visual as well as
voice guided instructions. Each manufacturer of AEDs has a unique form factor
with often small but significant differences in terms of how the user interacts
with each device. Instructions, even though they are simple and easy to follow,
should be carefully followed.

AED LAWS

AEDs are regulated by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) as Class III medical
devices for the treatment of sudden cardiac arrest. The FDA requires a
prescription authorizing the purchase or sale of all AEDs in the US.  This is
the only federal AED law currently in place. Each state issues and regulates
their own state laws which adds to the complexity of AED ownership and
management. For more information reference our AED State Law database.

AEDS IN SCHOOLS

The placement of AEDs in schools is not legislated in many states. One of the
primary reasons, of course, is cost. AED prices have decreased significantly
since the advent of many of these laws, so price is no longer the issue it once
was. In addition, we now have so much data to support the efficacy of these
devices that it is foolish to think that doing without is even an option. We
strongly advise that all schools maintain an AED program and that an ample
number of devices are in place to protect children and faculty. SCA can strike
anyone at any moment; having an AED available when needed will vastly improve
the odds of survival as well as help mitigate claims of negligence in the event
of a bad outcome.

AED FOR BUSINESS

It is important to protect your employees and customers as well as create a
culture of safety and security in your organization. Perhaps your constituents
are at greater risk for SCA. Or, perhaps you are aware now of the fact that
anyone, regardless of age or level of physical fitness, can succumb to SCA at
any time.

There are no specific common law requirements for AEDs in most businesses.
However, this does not mean that business owners should ignore the matter. The
absence of these devices could result in additional liabilities for the
organization if an employee or other person experiences SCA while on the
premises. All information and resources must be taken into account when
considering an AED program in the workplace.

The only businesses that are required to provide, perform, or give emergency
assistance to people who may be at risk of experiencing a heart attack or who
have heart disease are ones that owe a specific duty of care to their clients or
customers. Examples include a caretaker, medical specialist, gym (CrossFit etc),
and public swimming pools. It is vital to ensure that you consider all necessary
information and legislation when making the decision to invest in AED devices or
not.

AED REQUIREMENTS BY STATE

It is essential to realize how many lives one can save through the use of AEDs,
whether required by law or not. Trained professionals and ordinary people can
learn how to use these devices.

The specific requirements governing AEDs vary from state to state. Laws are
often made according to device registration, training, physician oversight, and
AED placement requirements. For more information we recommend referencing our
AED State Law database.

LOCATIONS WHERE AEDS ARE REQUIRED

Certain states require that AEDs are made available in the following locations:

 * Specific types of new construction areas
 * Dental offices - especially if anesthesia is administered
 * Facilities or buildings where there are over 300 people - including Churches,
   Synagogues, and Mosques
 * Coal mine operators
 * Golf courses
 * Jails or prison facilities
 * Ocean surf beaches
 * Public Swimming Pools
 * Gaming and racing facilities
 * Optometrists - If anesthesia is administered
 * Health clubs
 * Dialysis centers

HOW MANY AEDS ARE REQUIRED IN A BUILDING?

There is no standard answer applicable to every building and organization. The
purpose of having clearly identified policies and procedures, including AED
response time goals, is foundational in AED program creation, but very dynamic
in nature.  AED Response Time is defined as the amount of time from when a
suspected SCA victim collapses or is reasonably identified as a possible SCA
victim to the time the AED is first used on that victim. Ensure that all people
in the building know where the various AEDs are positioned with an AED wall
sign.

TYPES OF AED DEFIBRILLATOR

There are two types of AEDs that can be used to save someone who is suffering
from sudden cardiac arrest.

They are:

 * Fully automatic
 * Semi-automatic

AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR

Fully automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) are able to monitor the heart's
rhythm and automatically perform the shock if the device's software calls for
it. It does not require the user to initiate any action. These are often a great
option for anyone who wants to learn how to use one of these devices.

Conversely semi-automatic defibrillators (AEDs) work just like their fully
automatic counterpart with one big exception. The semi-automatic machine does
NOT automatically administer the shock. Instead, the device gives a sign to the
user to deliver the defibrillation shock. Often times medical professionals are
more comfortable utilizing these devices.

Fully functioning AED pads are crucial for any automated external defibrillator.
These accessories are what deliver the shock as they link the machine to the
victim's chest. We offer pads from all 6 US manufacturers. AED Pads cannot be
used more than once which is why it is prudent to have replacement pads on hand.
Device owners or managers must also track AED pad expiration dates and replace
expired pads as needed. As a customer of AED USA, we will automatically track
your pad expiration dates and serve up replenishment reminders as needed.

AED BATTERIES

Like any portable electronic device, AEDs have batteries which must be
maintained.  At AED USA we offer batteries for all 6 US manufacturers. Device
owners or managers must track AED battery expiration dates and replace device
batteries as needed. As a customer of AED USA, we will automatically track your

proprietary AED Notification System will automatically notify both parties when
certification is set to expire so that we can work together to make sure that
all employees that need recertification receive timely training. Call us today
if you need certification or re-certification for you or your employees.

AED CPR

It is essential to learn how and when to utilize an AED during CPR. An AED is
frequently needed during CPR to help regain the heartbeat's natural rhythm and
to protect the victims' heart. In general, CPR should be performed if the
patient is non-responsive and not breathing and an AED should be applied after
CPR is performed. The cycle should be repeated if one can see that there is
still no response. While it is crucial to learn CPR as well as when to utilize
an AED, it is vital for you or someone else to call 911 immediately upon
arriving on the scene. Call us today so that you can join our AED program and
receive the necessary training on how to perform CPR, utilize the AED and
hopefully save a life.
