ATTENDANCE AT BBHES

Attendance at school is one of the most important factors in our students’
education. We understand illnesses happen and emergency life events occur; these
are a priority. However, consistent attendance at school is vital to healthy
academic and social growth for our students.

Schools are required by Ohio law to notify families when a student has become
“excessively absent” or “habitually truant”. These are different, but both have
a potential negative impact on the academic and/or social growth for your child.
Excessively absent means a student has been absent for 65 hours in the school
year, or 38 hours in one month. These hours can be for both excused or unexcused
reasons, and once a student reaches the threshold it may be why the student is
struggling in school academically and/or socially. For clarification, excused
absences are for the following reasons: a verifiable illness, a death in the
family, an approved vacation, or a religious holiday. Once a student has reached
or passed this threshold, the families will be notified that their child has
been excessively absent from school, and moving forward if the student misses
three (3) or more consecutive days of school, documentation will need to be
provided in order to count the days as excused. An absence intervention team may
be put into place at this time and meetings scheduled with the guardian(s) and
student to set up a plan to increase attendance.

Habitual truancy means a student has unexcused absences for 72 hours in a school
year or 42 hours in one month. An absence intervention team will be assigned to
your child and a plan created in partnership with the guardian, student and
school team will be created and implemented to increase school attendance.
Typically, a student will reach the excessive absence threshold well before they
will become habitual truant.

If your child has met or exceeded a threshold, you will be receiving a
notification letter by the end of the week outlining the absences and this
information.. The main concern with the excessive absences is that for some
students, this has a direct connection to difficulty understanding subject
concepts, developing meaningful peer relationships and keeping
healthy/productive routines. We understand that for many students who are
excessively absent, this could have been mainly from a family trip, one week of
a bad illness, or all from excused absences. Remember, we are required to notify
families, regardless of if the absences are excused or unexcused, both types
count toward the threshold, and the student still has not been in school for an
“excessive” amount of time.

Please help us stay committed with communicating to our students the importance
of consistent attendance to school. If you have any questions about your child's
attendance, please reach out to the grade level principal. Thank you.

REMINDERS FOR ARRIVAL

If you are dropping your child off in the morning, please use the drop-off loop.
There are several students being dropped off in the parking lot and walking
across the lot to the school which is causing an unsafe situation. There are
others who are pulling up by the handicap parking spots and creating a second
drop-off line. This is creating a problem to those who need to access the these
parking spots. It is critical that we all keep our students safe by following
the protocols in place. Thank you!

WATER BOTTLES

We have an increased number of students bringing metal cups to school such as
Stanleys and Yetis. These cups are not secure and spill throughout the day.
Please encourage your child to bring a plastic water bottle with a screw top
cap. Thank you for your assistance with this.

ATTENDANCE AT BBHES

Attendance at school is one of the most important factors in our students’

academic and social growth for our students.

Schools are required by Ohio law to notify families when a student has become

HAPPY NEW YEAR

I hope you and your family had an enjoyable winter break! We are certainly
excited to welcome our students back tomorrow, January 9th. Our teachers have
worked today on your child's second quarter report card. These report cards will
be accessible through Progressbook on Friday, January 19th. All kindergarten

REMINDERS FOR THE NEW YEAR!

 * Please be sure your child has the proper attire for outdoor recess. Students
will go outside if the actual temperature is at least 20 degrees. Should the
wind chills are significantly lower, students will remain indoors. Be sure
all items brought to school are labeled in the event it becomes lost.

THANK YOU TO PSO!

Thank you to our PSO for the wonderful classroom parties on Friday. The costumes
were so creative, the food was yummy, and the games were fun! Thank you for
planning such fun parties for our kids!

Please note: Kids will not be permitted to wear costumes on Tuesday. Costume day
was on Friday, October 27th.

BOOK CHECK OUT INFORMATION

With a longer book checkout time period, we thought it would be helpful for you
and your student to receive regular updates on what books your student has
checked out from the library. A checkout notice will be emailed to the student
directly and the email address in our records for home every Sunday night. If
the system and everything works correctly, If you are not receiving a notice,
then your student does not have a book checked out, or I don't have your email
address correct in the system. Please note, that there are never fines for
overdue books. If a book is lost or missing, let us know. We will mark it as
such in your students' record and closer to the end of the year figure out
missing book fees. (So many times the books are found - hoping to alleviate that
stress/worry/refund.) Please email hustonk@bbhcsd.org with any questions or
concerns.

PAX TOOTLE RAFFLE WINNERS!

zoom_out_map

CHARACTER COUNTS AT BBHES

Each month BBHES will focus on a different character trait of a good PAX leader.
We will be on the lookout for students who display these character traits.

The word of the month for October is Accountability. Accountability means taking
ownership of one's actions and responsibilities. It means giving one's best
effort at all times. When you are personally accountable, you take ownership of
what happens because of your choices and actions. You do not blame others or
make excuses, and you do what you can to make amends when things go wrong. To be
accountable is to own your choices!

Three students from each grade level who display this character trait on a
regular basis will be chosen to earn a golden coin to use in our Book Vending
Machine. We know our students can do it! Winners will be announced at the end of
the month.

HALLOWEEN FUN AT BBHES

Classroom parties will take place on Friday, October 27th. Please be reminded
that all volunteers will need to check in at the reception desk with a driver's
license and create a visitor badge through Lobby Guard.

Children are permitted to wear a simple Halloween costume to school on this day.
Please see the costume guidelines below.

 * Costumes should not impact the student's ability to be transported to school
nor impact their ability to participate in learning activities throughout the
   day.

 * Masks are not permitted as part of the costume.

 * Children are to WEAR THEIR COSTUMES TO SCHOOL and will keep them on
   throughout the day.

 * Costumes should be fun and appropriate as opposed to costumes that depict
blood, violence, death, or gruesome in nature. Offensive costumes should not
be worn and no weapons or fake blood should be brought to school.

 * Makeup or face paint should not be a part of your child’s costume for school.

 * Please plan for costumes to be comfortable and not big and bulky, as students
will be wearing them throughout the day.

UPCOMING ASSESSMENTS

As many of you know, beginning in the 2023-2024 school year and in accordance
with Ohio’s dyslexia support laws (ORC 3323.251), all Ohio schools must
administer an approved tier 1 universal dyslexia screener that can assist in
identifying students whose current level of skills may indicate a potential for
being at risk of reading difficulties such as dyslexia.

There are no exceptions or exemptions in the dyslexia support laws. All students
in grades K-3 must receive the tier 1 universal screener. BBHCSD will be
utilizing Acadience (formerly known as DIBELS) in grades K-1 and i-Ready
Literacy Tasks in grades 2-3. While some components of these assessment tools
have been updated to meet the requirements of the law, they have been used in
the past in BBHCSD.

Both assessment tools serve the dual purpose as tier 1 universal dyslexia
screeners and determining on-track and off-track (in fulfillment of the Third
Grade Reading Guarantee law). The only difference stipulated in the law is all
kindergarten students are to receive the tier 1 universal dyslexia screener in
January. Thus, the winter administration of Acadience will be used for
kindergartners as their tier 1 universal dyslexia screener. Assessments will
begin this week and conclude on September 29.

Students in Grades 4 and 5 will also be taking the i-Ready Reading Diagnostic
Assessment. The assessment window will be closing on September 29th for all
students in grades K-5.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

BBHES will continue to focus on school attendance this year and the importance
of getting your child to school on time. School begins promptly at 9:00 a.m.
This means that your children must be in their classrooms ready to learn at this
time. If your child will be absent from school, please call the attendance
call-off line at 440-740-4100 no later than 9:00 a.m. Please be sure to leave
your name, your child's name and teacher, and the reason for your child's
absence. If you do not leave a reason, your child's absence will be marked as
unexcused.

Regular school attendance is essential for your child's academic success,

AUGUST 20, 2023

It was so nice to see our families in the building for the Meet and Greet events
last week. Having the kids back in the building makes it feel like a school! I
am excited to welcome our first-grade through fifth-grade students back to
school tomorrow, August 21, 2023, and welcome our kindergarten "New Bees" on
their first official day, Thursday, August 24, 2023. I am confident that this
school year will be filled with fun and excitement for your child and that BBHES
will be a place where our staff and students want to work, learn, and enjoy!

zoom_out_map

FIRST DAY REMINDERS

 * Please do not drop your child off prior to 8:45 am. All cars will line up in
the front loop of the school. Staff will be outside to assist so parents
should not exit vehicles. All students must exit on the curbside of the car.
 * When sending in money for your child's lunch account, please label it clearly
with your child's first and last name in the memo line.
 * Change your child's default pick-up mode in Pikmykid.
 * Beekeeper families must park in the lot and enter the building to sign in
their child. There is absolutely no parking in the front loop at any time.
 * Please bring your driver's license when volunteering in the building or
picking up a child. We will not release a child to any adult without the
   proper identification.

zoom_out_map

IMPORTANT DISMISSAL INFORMATION

 * Please go into PikmyKid and set your child's default for pick-up. Choose the
mode your child will take most often home from school. Your child will go
home based on the dismissal mode set in PikMyKId.
 * Any changes in dismissal modes must be changed in your Pikmykid account no
later than 2:45 pm. If you need assistance with this process, please email or
   call your child's grade-level secretary.
 * When arriving to pick up your child at the car line, please be sure to
announce your arrival in the Pikmykid app (if applicable).
 * Display all car tags so they can be easily seen by our dismissal team. All
families were provided two tags during the Meet and Greets. Please keep them
in your cars even if car pick-up is not your primary mode. We use these tags
in the event of an emergency as well.
 * Please do not block our crosswalks. We have students who walk to and from
   school each day.

 * If you need to pick up your child early, please make sure to park, come in,
and sign out your child prior to 2:45 pm. No early dismissals after this
time. We will not release a child to an adult without the proper
identification, so please bring your driver's license.
 * All walkers and bikes will be picked up on the sidewalk near the preschool. A
staff member will cross the students and meet families on the north side of
the property. Parents are not permitted to pick up walkers/bikers at the

PIKMYKID DISMISSAL APP

BBHES will continue to use the PikMyKid dismissal application this school year
just like last year. The student information should still be populated in the
program. We will update bus numbers as soon as they are made available to us.
Your child's car tag number should remain the same as last school year. All
families will get two car tags which can be picked up at the Meet and Greets.

If you are not familiar with the app, please download it and review the
information below.

PikMyKid is a dismissal software that is intended to simplify dismissal, reduce
traffic congestion, and most importantly, improve overall safety. The unique
features of PikMyKid allow you, as parents, to easily change pick-up modes,
quickly delegate to an alternate individual for pickup, change to an ‘After
School’ program, and even schedule for future pickup mode, pickup individual,
and after-school programs. This app allows you to be in full control of your
child’s dismissal and it gives the school information regarding dismissal and
the ability to acknowledge every change and instantly check your child’s
dismissal status should you have a question.

To Learn a little more on your own, please check out the following link that
will show you a few of the PikMyKid features.
