The history of Hispanic and Latinx people, cultures, and influences in the
United States is varied and complex. And while we continue to expand our
perspectives and work toward true justice, inclusion, and equity, Hispanic
Heritage Month is the perfect time to acknowledge continuing issues while
honoring the influences on American society and celebrating how far we’ve come.

From the Spanish governor of Louisiana, Bernardo de Gálvez, joining George
Washington to fight the British in 1777 to the 300,000 Latinos enlisted during
World War II, the history of Hispanic and Latinx involvement in the U.S.’s
pursuit of freedom is long.

Watch: For NBC News, young members of the Hispanic and Latinx communities,
including actor Gina Rodriguez, discuss the complexities of growing up with this
heritage in the United States. Alongside difficulties and obstacles they often
face is the hope for a bright future.

Let’s Celebrate!
If you’re looking for ways to incorporate celebrations of Hispanic Heritage
Month into your life and workplace, start here:

Seek input from your team. Companies can start by going to the source and asking
Hispanic and Latinx team members how they’d like to see the month commemorated
this year. Just make sure you aren’t putting undue burden on your colleagues’
shoulders. This is about getting input, not passing off a responsibility.

Do some research. From books to TV to movies, there is a vast array of resources
for learning more about Hispanic and Latinx history and experiences. Challenge
yourself to discover something new.

Donate or volunteer. As much as Hispanic Heritage Month is about celebration,
it’s also a time to acknowledge persisting issues and the work that still needs
to be done. If you’re able, make a donation to and/or volunteer at one of the
many reputable organizations dedicated to furthering Hispanic/Latinx causes.

Plan a celebration for the office. It’s time to party! Or, better, to
commemorate. Get your whole office in on Hispanic Heritage Month by scheduling a
speaker, offering traditional cuisine from a particular country, or creating a
diversity, equity, and inclusivity committee specifically focused on Hispanic
and Latinx progress in your organization.

In 2020, the United States Congress enacted legislation calling for the
Smithsonian to establish the National Museum of the American Latino. Visitors
will learn how Latinos have contributed and continue to contribute to U.S. art,
history, culture, and science. Check out https://latino.si.edu/ for more
information.

Take Away: Today, Hispanic and Latinx Americans make up the largest minority
population in the United States. These millions of citizens represent a rich
history of influence from a wide range of cultures, experiences, perspectives,
ambitions, hopes, and ideas. This year, take the steps and commit to doing your
part as an individual or an organization to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month.
