seriously. We know players of all ages come to Xbox to have fun, and you deserve

measures that support all. The first step to keeping kids safe is to ensure a
child account is setup for any young gamers in your family.
CREATE A CHILD ACCOUNT
If you have children 13 or under who use an Xbox console, we encourage you to
set up a child account for them. Features of properly setting up an account
include managing a child’s gaming activities like screentime, spending limits,
privacy and content settings and more.

Why did Xbox have a settlement with the FTC related to child accounts?
At Xbox, we take our responsibility to society and the gaming community very
seriously. We invest in security, privacy, and safety measures that best support
our community, and are committed to continued improvement and innovation. We
entered into a settlement with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to resolve
concerns regarding our previous account creation process for Xbox Live. We are
improving our account creation process to provide clearer, direct notice to
parents about what we do with children’s personal data before we obtain verified
parental consent from parents/caregivers.
What has Xbox done to solve this issue?
Xbox has updated the onboarding process for new accounts, updated its direct
notice to parents regarding how children’s data is collected, used, and stored,
and updated the data retention systems.
Is there anything I need to do?
Yes. If you have children in your home we encourage you to get the Xbox Family
Settings app to setup child accounts as there are many safety benefits of
properly setting up child accounts and managing your child’s settings all in one
place.
If you already have a child account setup, you may be required to verify the
account with Xbox. We’ll help you through this process when it’s time to take
action.
Did my Xbox account get hacked?
The settlement with the FTC is about data collection processes and data
retention policies. It is not related to outside parties gaining access to your
personal information.
