The Lions had slowly been losing their hold of first place in the SCIHL while the Tycoons had been inching up trying to advance past second place in the standings. The game started well for the Tycoons with the team scoring three unanswered goals, the first two of which by veteran Scott Strickland and the third by American Connor Quinn. Former NHLer Robbie Schremp would counter for RBC though with a snipe top corner on Tycoons goaltender and HK native Evan Thorpe. The teams traded goals in the late minutes of the first period with Scott Strickland's hat trick, followed by a Lions goal by the all-time leading scorer of the CIHL Greg Smyth, before closing out the frame with a Tycoon lead of 4-2. The second period was a bit more even with both teams potting two goals each. Former NCAA Division 1 national champion Nicholas Weberg took a feed on a pass from Greg Smyth and chipped a backhander over the shoulder of Evan Thorpe within the first minute of the second period. The Lion's Greg Smyth then scored to even up the game just a few minutes later. The Tycoons would not be outdone though as they regained the lead, with goals by their newest full-time addition, Frenchman Leon Ruelle, along with Scott Strickland's fourth goal of the evening. This lead would diminish for the Tycoons however as the RBC Lions completely took over in the final period. The Lions opened up the third-period scoring during a power play, with Greg Smyth dishing a nifty pass over to Jeff Griffin who was creeping back door, reducing their deficit by one. Former New York Islander Robbie Schremp would then score the game-tying and go-ahead goals respectively for RBC, with Nicolas Weberg sealing the deal on an empty-netter in the final seconds of the game. Despite the loss, Tycoon veteran Scott Strickland who came into the game with just 4 points, doubled his season scoring totals with a 4-goal night. Mississauga native Francis Lam also had a huge game, taking away 5 assists from the contest. Meanwhile SCIHL scoring leader Robbie Schremp along with Norwegian Nicolas Weberg each had 6 points on the evening for the Lions. RBC holds on to first place in the league to start the new year with an 8-6 victory over the Hong Kong Tycoons. Unicorns entered the game 1 point up on Asiaxpat and were hoping to open some space in the standings. However, AsiaXpat came out of the blocks flying. The first 5 minutes of the game was pretty much all in the Unicorns zone as the Xpat players buzzed the net and had numerous chances to score only to have something get blocked, or Arthur Chan making an excellent save to keep it scoreless. The Unicorns first real opportunity came when Leon Mo tried attacking the net but was thwarted by Keira Mok (LPP) standing in for Martin Jim. In the same sequence, the puck bounced out to the top of the left faceoff circle where Grant Phillips walked in and wired a slap shot top corner glove side to open the scoring against the run of play and the only goal in the first period. The second period started with the Unicorns on a powerplay which Leon Mo capitalized making it 2-0 early in the 2nd. The rest of the period continued in similar fashion as the first period as the Unicorn team defense continued to frustrate the Xpat players and keeping their clean sheet. With the zone time lopsidedly in AsiaXpat’s favor, they finally broke thru at the 12-minute mark of the 3rd as Paul Chai finished a nice play from Justin Wong and Neil Ng. The game remained 3-1 until the last 3 minutes when the Unicorns took a penalty allowing Justin Wong to score a powerplay goal giving them some life. On the next shift, AsiaXpat completed the comeback to tie the game as Alvin Sham made no mistake and tied the game. In overtime, Sham had a good individual chance to finish the game but was tripped by Mo putting Xpat on the powerplay. It took only 9 seconds for Sham to score the OT game-winner off the faceoff completing the comeback and snatching the win from the Unicorns. Arthur Chan (Unicorns) faced 28 shots while Keira Mok (Asiaxpat LPP) faced 14 shots. The OT win by AsiaXpat, 1 point gained by Unicorns moved them into a 3-way tie for first ahead of RBC playing their game. Three Stars of the game: 1. Alvin Sham (AsiaXpat) 2. Justin Wong (AsiaXpat) 3. Leon Mo (Unicorns) Finding their defensive game New year, new system? It looked like a very different Ice Wolves team in 2024 as they stormed out of the gate vs top-seed RBC Lions and took the play to them, while limiting the odd man rushes that RBC used to burn them in previous games. Hamish Pang opened the scoring in the low slot as his shot ramped up off an RBC defender and beat Keira Mok to the short side. Although the teams exchanged chances, it looked like it was going to be a 1-0 period until Danny Chiu finished off a broken play with Christopher Lee and Fabrizio Fatia and shot short side to tie the game with just 4 seconds remaining in the first. There was no scoring in the second in a very evenly played period where both teams had limited chances on net. 9 minutes into the 3rd, Jovi Wat broke the tie. In the remaining 9 minutes, Ice Wolves put the pressure on, and with just 48 seconds remaining Jacky Chan tied the game and we had our 2nd OT game of the new year. OT solved nothing and we had our first shootout of the season where Calix Ma scored the only goal giving RBC Lions the win and regaining first in the division. Jerome Lui (Ice Wolves) faced 14 shots, while Keira Mok (RBC Lions) faced 23 shots. Three Stars of the game: 1. Keira Mok (RBC Lions) 2. Calix Ma (RBC Lions) 3. Jerome Lui (Ice Wolves) Going in different directions After 2 defensive games, it was the 2 bottom feeders turn. YATS Engineering were one point back of JOG Sports. Were we going to see another low-scoring defensive-minded game? It looked like it in the first as the teams both looked rusty to start the period. Theo Wong opened the scoring at the 9-minute mark firing from the high slot past a screened Loron Orris, returning from LTIR. Gavino Ng replied for JOG on the powerplay as he took a cross-ice pass from Hugo Fan at centre ice and calmly walked in and scored 5-hole on Keira Mok (LPP) as the defenders were nowhere to be found. Theo Wong scored his 2nd of the night after he caught the JOG defense too far apart and he fired top corner stick side with 30 seconds left in the first. 2-1 YATS after 1. In the 2nd, YATS’ Justin Kuok and JOG’s Hugo Fan exchanged goals before YATS exploded for the next 6 goals. Wong completed his hattrick, followed by Brendon Lui, Kuok with his 2nd, Eugene Wong with a goal from the blue line, and Wong again with his 4th of the night before Brendon Lui also scored his 2nd putting the game away. Jason Yip scored a short-handed goal with a minute remaining in the 3rd, but it was too little too late. Keira Mok (YATS LPP) faced 14 shots while Loron Orris (JOG Sports) faced 25 shots. With the win, YATS leapfrogs JOG into 5th place and 4 points away from Ice Wolves for the last playoff spot. JOG Sports has now lost 7 in a row. Three Stars of the game: 1. Theo Wong (YATS Engineers) 2. Justin Kuok (YATS Engineers) 3. On top of their studs Connor Quinn, Jimi Fanstone and Jonny Szychta, the Tycoons were also without their top goaltender Evan Thorpe. In a Cinderella story of sorts, veteran Ray Loo, whom went undrafted during this year's SCIHL draft answered the call for Hong Kong as their LPP goalie for the evening. It didn't look great for the CDNIS science teacher in the beginning though as the Warriors potted a goal in the first period's only goal. However the Tycoons rallied behind “Ray Ray” as they scored four consecutive goals carrying a 4-1 lead into the early minutes of the third period. During that span, HK native and Oxford graduate Connor Daly took the charge scoring two of his three goals on the night. The Warriors were simply stymied by the Tycoon's offense and tendacious forecheck. The latter was simply playing their hearts out for their veteran LPP goaltender and Loo returned the favour by making several key saves on Warriors stud defenseman Dave Belluche and LPP star Jesse Lussier. The Hong Kong Tycoons capped off the night with a decisive victory over the Kowloon Warriors, with the final score of 7-3. Along Daly's four points, Jeff Wall had a spectacular night with a hat trick and two assists, while Missisuage native Francis Lam chipped in with three helpers of his own. The Hong Kong Tycoons are still sitting in second place in the SCIHL standings and are quietly creeping up on the league leading RBC Lions.
