Veterans come in all shapes, sizes, and ages. From a 101-year-old World War II
veteran who worked bagging groceries until the pandemic hit, and refused to take
breaks due to his dedication to being an active and contributing member of
society, to the female veterans who often face different obstacles upon
returning from duty, many veterans defy stereotypes.

Representing 9.4 percent of the veteran population in 2015, a number that’s
predicted to double by 2040, female veterans often face unique challenges upon
returning from active duty. Learn more about the contributions and assistance
provided for female veterans here.

Watch: At 101 years old, World War II Army Air Force veteran Benny Facito is an
icon of determination. Continuing to work as a bagger at his local grocery store
for two 4-hour shifts each week until the pandemic hit, Benny’s work ethic is
nothing short of inspiring. He serves as a brilliant reminder and example of the
lasting positive effect veterans like him have on their communities and our
nation.

Regardless of age, gender, race, religion, orientation, ethnicity, or identity,
it is our duty as Americans to value the people who make up America’s armed
forces, to respect their service and sacrifices, and to do what we can to make
their transition from active duty to civilian life easier.

Take Away: Appreciation for the veterans in your life, business, and community
should go beyond Veteran’s Day. From something as simple as offering a veteran a
ride to the doctor’s office to training service dogs that help those living with
PTSD, learn what you can do to help veterans year round.
