I've read Torchship and Torchship Pilot. The main character is an amoral 5'2" 29
year-old woman, signing on to a space ship freighter "Fives Full" as a pilot,
but secretly working as an intelligence operator with a revenge axe to grind.
She and the others are Diskers i.e. from The Disconnected Worlds (not system
linked/networked). There's techo stuff around the freighter using analog space
travel, (hard science is not my thing), but it renders the freighter immune to
systems attacks by A1 and Fusion enemies - which proves very handy as the
freighter sees a lot of battle action. Whilst the MC doesn't hesitate to kill,
extract information from others in ways that are in total contravention to the
Geneva convention and is largely indifferent to her actions causing the loss of
thousands of lives, she manages to fall in love with one of the crew. He isn't
happy about her amorality, but is convinced he can help her grow a conscience -
IMO, this is a bit of a stretch.
The first book revolves around a number of space adventures (the freighter is
small, has to make a profit, so accepts hazardous jobs), against a growing
background of war rumblings between the Diskers, Fusion worlds and the A1s.
Spoiler alert:
There are 5 main characters, the second book gets rid of 3 of them - I think
they became superfluous in terms of moving the story along - which comprises a
series of war/spying adventures in defense of the Disker worlds with all the
characters now conscripts in the Navy. The body count is fairly heavy.
Some of the characterisation is stereotyped e.g. a dresser assigned to MC,
prances, his wrists dangle, his assistants are effete. When it comes to sex
(alluded to, but never graphic) the MC giggles quite a bit - she also scampers
on occasion. It's a bit puzzling as to why her husband fell in love with her, as
he has some passive aggressive thoughts about some of the stuff she has done and
yet he envisages a future where they have children. It's almost as if the author
wants to write about space adventure, science and war, but knows he has to
include characterisation, and much of this seems stereotyped and clunky. I'm
debating buying the 3rd book in the series - they aren't expensive, so probably
will.

This is a tight little hard sci-fi novel. The sci-fi is hard enough to make the
action feel gritty and believable, but soft enough that the tech level supports
the narrative and doesn't interfere with it.
It's actually more of a "Continuing adventures of..." novel featuring from three
to five shorter story arcs, depending on how you count them, but it's presented
in chronological order and the stories weave in and out enough to tie the whole
thing together as a seamless whole. The crew of the starship "Fives Full" is
pretty much a blue collar mixed bag of characters who keep getting thrown into
(or dive headfirst into) situations that call for a little cleverness, a little
ingenuity, and a lot of bravery.
The setting is a fully realized post-apocalyptic one with a few major factions
that exist in an uneasy détente. Discovering what those factions are and how
they play off of each other is part of the fun of the book. It makes you feel
like you're exploring this big new universe.
Overall, a highly recommended book that will serve as on of my go-to titles for
showing people just how good the works of independent publishers and authors can
be.

I enjoyed this first work and am looking forward to any sequel (Oh look,
_Torchship Pilot_ is now available - off to order after this review).
Good points:
- belilevable mechanics
- developed and fleshed-out characters
- interesting universe and background history
- good story that keeps moving along and fits together
Nits:
- throughout the text the author refers to ship acceleration in "gravs" which I
interpreted as gravities. Normal cruise seems to be 10 gravs which would seem to
imply 10x Earth gravity acceleration but no mention is made of any type of
inertial remediation or anti-acceleration field. Given that section titles list
location and the location gravity/acceleration in meter/sec (should be m/s**2),
I think a global search and replace was made that induced this discontinuity.
Otherwise, an enjoyable read with an interesting background to his universe.

It's good scifi. This is not a space opera, but more of a near-future sort of
just-hard-enough scifi. World building starts solid and keeps getting better,
the main characters are likable and engaging, but it takes a bit before some of
the not-so-main characters become distinct. The main plot is simple: keep the
ship and crew working. Because of that, it allows the author to explore is world
in a way that makes sense. The subplots weave in and out, occasionally I wasn't
sure about the timeline, but Mr. Gallagher always brought things back together.
Mr. Gallagher also paces the back story of his main protagonist throughout the
book, avoiding the info dump. As Mitchie's past is revealed to the reader, she
is forced to make decisions that change her. She's not the same at the end as
she was when she started.
One of the best things about the novel is the general can-do attitude of the
characters. I like reading stories where when the chips are down, the characters
roll up their sleeves and get to work. The working crew of 'Fives Full' are a
fun lot to knock around the Universe with.

For me, this was a casual read and I took about two weeks to slowly work my way
through it. Not because it did not hold my interest, it did. It is a series of
adventures the crew of the cargo ship Fives Full take over the course of almost
a year. Each adventure is a mini story unto itself and they each have their own
dramas and dilemmas to overcome--which they do, of course. And the book had a
proper ending IMO, Thank you Karl K. Gallagher.
Other reviewers have talked about the analog vs. digital, humans vs. AI and do
it well enough to not repeat it here. If you light sci-fi that is not bogged
down in the details of the science, but has some good adventures with a side of
romance, I think you'll enjoy this read.

of Firefly episodes, but with some overarching theme to join them. The concept
of having to use analogue based spacecraft is very interesting, if a little
contrived.
