TOGETHER, WE CAN END THE MISERY OF COLONY CAGES AND LET HENS BE HENS

As you read this, over 1.2 million hens are incarcerated in colony cages in New
Zealand. They will spend their whole lives like this, intensively farmed for
their eggs. It is a cruel and unnecessary system, which is already being banned
in many European countries and US states. Yet our Government continues to drag
its heels on this critical animal welfare issue.

With your support, we can keep the pressure on New Zealand’s Government to end
the use of colony cages, while educating people about the suffering of caged
hens. Your kind gift can bring caged hens one step closer to freedom. Will you

A hen in a colony cage will live out her life in 750 square centimetres of space
– about the size of an A4 piece of paper. The conditions are so cramped they are
unable to express many of their most basic natural behaviours, which is in
direct breach of the Animal Welfare Act 1999. She will never know the feeling of
soft earth beneath her feet, or the warmth of the sun on her feathers. Unable to
exhibit natural hen behaviours, such as stretching her wings or foraging for
food, she will spend her life in that cage – only released when it’s her turn to
be killed.
