Nanny knew best.

New Yorkers were living longer and their health prospering during the tenure of
anti-everything Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a new 10-year city Health Department
study shows.

Gotham’s death rate tumbled 11.1 percent and life spans expanded more than 2¹/₂
years to 81.1 years during the study period — 2004-2013 — which ended with
Bloomberg’s third term in office.

The latest Summary of Vital Statistics data show New Yorkers now live longer
than the national average, 78.8 years. And that’s a vindication of the
ex-mayor’s litany of health crusades, crowed Bloomberg spokesman Howard Wolfson
on Sunday.

“Mike Bloomberg was the health mayor,” Wolfson said. “He focused on public
health and put resources behind initiatives to improve the health of all New
Yorkers.”

Under Bloomberg, the city saw:

 * A ban on smoking in public places in 2002, hizzoner’s first year as mayor.

 * A law forbidding trans fats in eateries in 2006.

 * A campaign to lower sodium in 2008.

 * A report card grading system for restaurants in 2010.

 * A push for stricter regulation of tanning salons in 2013.

 * And an effort that led to the posting of calorie counts on menus in 2007.

Bloomberg — who also unsuccessfully tried to forbid the sale of supersized sodas
in 2012 — never flinched when critics branded him a nanny, Wolfson revealed.

“It clearly paid off. The data speak for themselves. That’s why being called
‘The Nanny’ didn’t bother him,” Wolfson said.

Premature deaths plummeted by 16 percent during the decade, and the racial gaps
in death rates narrowed, according to the study.

One reason why: the homicide rate fell 43 percent during the decade — so much so
that the suicide rate now exceeds the homicide rate, 6.5 suicides per 100,000
vs. 4.1 homicides per 100,000, the study reveals.

Deaths from HIV/AIDS plummeted 63 percent, thanks to medical advances as well as
practicing safe sex, officials said. The city introduced branded NYC condoms in
2006, which were distributed free across the Big Apple.

And there was a near 30 percent drop in alcohol-related deaths.

In 2013, the last year of the study, 53,409 New Yorkers died overall, with heart
disease the top cause, followed by cancer, and influenza/pneumonia — though
death rates from all three fell in the decade.

Bucking the trend were deaths from Alzheimer’s disease, which shot up 193
percent since 2004, which health officials attribute to more accurate reporting.

The de Blasio administration is staying the course, its top health official
said.

“We continue to see positive changes in core indicators of health, including
decreasing death rates, infant mortality rates, and teen birth rates, while life
expectancy increases,” said DOH Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett.
