VIDEO: BLACK HISTORY MATTERS

VIDEO: BLACK HISTORY MATTERS

Print

From the day we are all born, wherever we are born, society sends us subtle
messages about who belongs and who doesn’t. What’s “normal” and what isn’t.
Who’s in and who’s out.

Black people have contributed to the world since homo sapiens arrived here eons
ago. According to National Geographic, Egyptians are credited with the invention
of the decimal system and were among the first civilizations to create a system
of written language. In fact, according to Britannica, The Rhind papyrus from
the 17th century BCE is an Egyptian scroll containing a long table of fractional
parts to help with division and eighty-four specific problems in arithmetic and
geometry.

Egypt is in Africa, which is a fact often obscured when history is taught. And
this obscuring and erasure of history is especially acute in the United States,
where the majority of our education focuses on the contributions of white
people, according to Leslie M. Harris, professor of history and African American
studies at Northwestern University.

This erasure helps to perpetuate the relegation of Blacks in America to
second-class citizenship. Because how can you “belong” in a society to which you
and your people contributed so little?

Watch: This video produced at Howard University, a Historically Black College
(HBCU) located in Washington, D.C., explores seven little known contributions of
Black people to American society.

Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus in 1955, but there
was a brave 15-year-old who chose not to sit at the back of the bus in 1954.
Claudette Colvin stood up to the driver and passengers, boldly speaking her
constitutional rights to remain seated near the middle of the vehicle. She was
arrested, and the first woman to be detained for her resistance.

Next Steps: Black people are central to world history despite the glaring
absence of their contributions in historical texts. And Black Americans have
contributed throughout the history of America in every area of society, from the
arts to STEM fields, despite their exclusion from American history books. Take
time during Black history month to find out more about the contributions of
Black people wherever you are. Watch a film by a Black filmmaker. Eat at a
Black-owned restaurant. Read a book by a Black author. Expand your view of who
and what belongs.
