I ended up incurring huge expenses due to losing my ENTIRE set of expedition/camping gear due to ...the first blizzard, delays getting my replacement set of luggage i Kathmandu due to high winds (which left me with the clothes on my back in Kathmandu, and replacing ANOTHER set of gear with purchases and rentals the night before leaving on my trek in the Himalayas), and a THIRD delay returning home due to a second blizzard at home. (Yes, I was clearly cursed.) I hardly knew how to even approach making a claim, and it was TravelGuard that helped me by suggesting and then actually re-arranging the details of three separate claims, in order to maximize what I was entitled to under my policy, despite hitting my limits. And they did so quickly. By contrast, the credit-card-based travel insurance I also had (which I tapped as secondary coverage because I hit my limits on my primary AIG policies) took MONTHS, and HOURS of re-entry, failed FAXes, and REPEATED discussions with MULTIPLE reps, and finally a kick upstairs to a supervisor, over a fraction of the payout compared to what AIG had readily handled without demur. Give these guys at AIG/Travel Guard credit -- they made it as easy as possible, were sympathetic and supportive, and wholly deserve this 5-star rating. EVASIVE NON-COMMITTAL RESPONSES, LACK OF INFORMAT Clearly their only 2 primary cares are taking your money and protecting themselves from any perceived potential liabilities or payouts. The initial purchase and payment were extremely easy. After that, all was bad. Getting any real answers to any questions is nearly impossible. I made 2 phone calls:... the 1st time I waited 1 hour 45 minutes in the voicemail queue only to be told that I had to speak to a different department, and then I waited an additional 1 hour to speak to that rep; the second time I also waited 1 hour 45 minutes. The 1st rep on the 1st phone call looked up my policy # and when I asked my question about whether or not something specific would be covered or excluded, her response was, "it's whatever your policy states." I explained the wording on the policy contradicted the wording on their website, and asked her if that specific situation would be covered (which a phone rep from a competing company previously told me directly it would not be and often is not covered in most policies), but she would only say it means whatever it says. I asked why she couldn't tell me if my policy would or would not cover something and she told me she "cannot pre-authorize or pre-deny any potential claim" and that I need to ask coverage questions to the claims department. She transferred me and, after a further 1 hour wait, the claims rep simply told me that they are not allowed to answer questions about what might or might not be covered by their policies. I later wanted to modify my policy to cover extra expenses, but first needed to know if that extra cost is claimable or excluded, so called again. The rep again couldn't/wouldn't tell me if that expense is excluded or coverable, and when I asked if I should pay extra for the extra coverage, she replied that their company never stands in the way of anyone who wants to buy extra coverage. I reminded her that my concern was that they would be happy to take my money to pay for coverage of an expense that they already knew they would deny/exclude, and she didn't respond to that. I decided to gamble and submitted the policy modification request via their website, which unhelpfully only asks you to input the requested modifications and your credit card number to authorize payment. A subsequent autogenerated email says you won't get any further correspondence from them, further leading me to believe that they might charge an unknown amount to my credit card, and I don't like the idea of committing without knowing how much I will be charged. I called to ask about the poorly-explained process and after waiting 90 minutes, a rep told me to write "contact me before charging my card to request authorization" in the comments section. I submitted my request (which the company states is responded to within 2 business days) and I heard nothing after 3+ business days, so I called back and waited another 1 hour 45 minutes in the voicemail queue (after pressing the buttons specifically to route me to a rep to talk about modifying my policy). I spoke with a rep who asked what I wanted. When I said I wanted to modify my policy, she asked for my policy number, put me on hold, and when she returned asked me if I wanted to make a claim. I said no, I wanted to modify my policy and haven't heard anything after 3 business days since submitting my web request, and she asked me again if I wanted to make a claim. I repeated myself, then she put me on hold and checked with the "admin people". She returned to say that my modification request should be processed by today, and they were running behind because they were busy. Later that afternoon I got an email specifying the additional cost of the extra coverage and asking me to reply to authorize it, but the information typed into the email is incorrect - it's not the same as the information from my original policy. I now have to contact them again to get that information right. I wondered if my experience is common so I checked the Better Business Bureau and other similar websites for reviews of Travel Guard. I notice nearly ALL are 1-star and mention the company either not taking any action on claims or disallowing claims and blatantly not covering things that the customer felt should be covered based on the wording of their policy. More disturbing is that the company responded to almost every review with 1 of 2 responses, either "coverage depends on what your contract says" (almost word for word what the one phone rep said to me, which makes me think that is their go-to excuse), or "your policy doesn't cover that issue no matter what you thought", disregarding the issue that the customers were complaining that they are improperly denying claims. I imagine they will respond in a like manner to this complaint as well. Regardless of their words, my impression is that this is a company that tries to give out as little info as possible so as to maximize their possibilities of refusing any payout and denying as many claims as possible. I have no confidence that, should I submit a claim, I will get anything back or experience anything other than a 9-month long back-and-forth fight to get anything from them. I wonder if requesting a refund within the 15-day timeframe would be as hard as everything else I've tried to do with them.
