Weekly News Tuesday August 8th, 2023 From the Editor Ford is doubling down on its electric vehicle production operations as it looks to ramp up production volumes. In Europe Chris White has been appointed to a new role as Chief Engineer of battery manufacturing. In this role White will be responsible for implementing the OEM’s global strategy for battery manufacturing engineering and developing leading edge manufacturing processes, equipment and methods. Ford’s European arm has also been investing heavily in upgrading its Cologne plant, transforming it into the Cologne Electric Vehicle (EV) Center. Across the pond, Ford has completed the retooling and expansion of its Rouge Electric Vehicle Center. This will see capacity for production of the F-150 Lightning treble to 150,000 units per year. This will also see an increase in the number of options and trim levels being made available. Development of every part of electric powertrains continues at pace. The Chinese vehicle market for electric vehicles continues to grow, with domestic OEM’s gaining an increasing share. To help boost sales in the region VW and Audi are strengthening their respective partnerships with Xpeng and SAIC to expand EV production and development. This will see VW invest $700m in Xpeng and partner on technology and platforms, while Audi will expand its partnership with SAIC to produce vehicles on one of its platforms.
