Seeing Red: The Power of Female Advocacy and Agency on International Women’s
   Day

Summary: After aspects of my physical and emotional pain were discounted by
doctors, therapists, psychiatrists, and even some friends and family for
years, Sharon Rosenblatt kept fighting. Loud and unrelenting, she found the
diagnosis that helped her to finally move on with her life with effective
treatment. So often, women’s mental and physical health can be dismissed as
stress or ‘lady troubles’ during that time of the month, but that couldn’t be
more inaccurate and dangerous for healthy outcomes. Sharon shares her story
of tireless energy to finally figure out ‘just what was wrong with her’, and
how to manage a chronic medical diagnosis with self-advocacy and agency.
Interwoven throughout the event will be historical and modern references to
icons who have helped demolish barriers to care and lifted women’s voices for
   health equity.

   Addiction

   Category Name: Events/Activities

Event type: Burke Breaking Boundaries Series

   Event Title: Overcoming Gambling Addiction

Event description: Adam Osmond is a Farmington, Connecticut, man who had a
bright future. He got his degree in business and opened his own convenience
store after graduation. At the store, Osmond sold lottery tickets for the
Connecticut Lottery, and that was his downfall. Osmond’s relationship with
the lottery started out innocent enough. He says he purchased his first
ticket in 1986, but his addiction didn’t start to spiral out of control until
many years later. Once Osmond’s business became more successful and he had
constant access to lottery tickets at his convenience store, he just couldn’t
help himself and continued to gamble.

Fortunately, Adam Osmond was able to seek help for his addiction and turn his
life around. Instead of spending all of his time and money on the lottery,
Osmond picked up a much healthier habit: running. Since 2008, Osmond has
participated in hundreds of races, including marathons and ultra-marathons.
Also, Osmond began working as an accountant and decided to use his skill for
data analysis to help other people suffering from gambling addiction. He has
even gone so far as to speak at the state capital several times to make a
case for funding for gambling treatment programs and other related
   legislation.

He has been the subject of international news and media coverage as well as a
   documentary detailing his journey.
