It is good if all Sri Lankans can put the country before one self. But it seems only a handful of people do this while the rest of the population always put self before the country as usual. Although we always blame politicians for the destruction of the country, the bitter truth is, it is the people who are responsible for everything and everyone and not only the politicians who hold power only for five or six years. We are talking about the last week which proved this fact again and again through various incidents. Firstly, it is good to talk about a group of individuals who put the country before self. They are from the Welimada State Hospital. They are the true sons and daughters of Mother Lanka because they stand by innocent poor people of this country and have put the country’s well-being before them. They conduct mobile hospital service to visit homes of patients and treat them. This is something unbelievable because this is a State Hospital and the staff consists of public servants. This should be a tribute to them. The Hospital Director is Dr. Kasun Bandara and the Public Health Nursing Officer is Madhuki Jayasekara. They do this while facing the same issues faced by all who work in the health sector. The difference between them and all the others is they offer more than what they have while all the others demand things in addition to what they already have. The tribute paid for them because of another story. According to that story, a minor employee of a State Hospital had asked one of the Additional Secretaries of the Health Ministry to push the wheelchair of her patient without knowing that she is an Additional Secretary attached to the Health Ministry. It is the duty of attendants of any State Hospitals to put patients in wheelchairs, push them and take them to doctors’ rooms, clinics and wards. But what most of them do is chew betel, spitting, smoking, using and selling illicit drugs, playing cards, using social media, taking bribes even to do a small thing like pushing a wheelchair, shouting at innocent poor helpless patients, etc. This is the current situation of human resources in the health service. There is no need to talk about anything else. This shows how Sri Lankan public servants put themselves before the country. Walking into any State Hospital or any other State institution without a ‘Contact’ is completely useless and only a waste of time and money. Public servants serve only those who have contact. These contacts can be politicians, relations of public servants, their friends, friends of friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, mistresses etc. The third ugly incident was reported when around 20 pilots refused to volunteer to fly a plane which carried several Sri Lankans who are scheduled to be employed in Korea. Those pilots have their job and they get paid. They do not need to worry about the rest of the Sri Lankan people who sacrifice everything and go abroad for employment. This is not the first time such an incident has been reported. On another occasion, several Sri Lankan youths who were about to go to Korea lost their new employment opportunities due to the delay of their flight. This also shows how Sri Lankans put themselves before the country and the level of selfishness of them. Money is everything for them and they care about nothing but money. Ports, Shipping and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva always stands by the ordinary people and he never favours anyone else other than the ordinary people. He reproved this when he revealed what actually happened in connection with the delay of the flight. He did not stop there. He reproved once again that he always thinks about the ordinary people when he stated that the world famous taxi service, Uber and another similar taxi service, Pickme will NOT be removed from the BIA. Uber and Pickme By now the whole of Sri Lanka knows that it is the taxi services Uber and Pickme that charge prices lower than the actual cost of rides. For example Uber and Pickme charge only Rs. 350 or Rs. 375 to travel five or five and half kilometres while ordinary three-wheeler drivers who wait in every single junction and who run along roads charge Rs. 750 or Rs. 800 to travel the very same distance. This is the bitter truth experienced by every Sri Lankan ordinary citizen. No one knows the plight of ordinary people in this country. This Government and the relevant Cabinet Minister did justice to the innocent poor ordinary people of this country and all the tourists who arrive here by making sure that they can get the service of Uber and Pickme. Only the innocent poor ordinary people who travel by three-wheeler experience the reality of the three-wheeler mafia of this country which mushroomed since COVID-19. Three-wheeler mafia members snatch money and all the other valuables from their passengers. They do not stop there. They sometimes sexually abuse female passengers. Some of those crooks who drive three-wheelers kill their female passengers after snatching their belongings and raping them. A three-wheeler driver is connected to almost every crime that takes place in Sri Lanka. They decide the charge for the hire after carefully examining the house/office/attire of the traveller. After charging Rs. 1,000 for a hire of Rs. 250 or Rs. 300 they chat with each other and exchange their tactics. It is these services, Uber and Pickme, which are the only sources of relief that the ordinary Sri Lankan people and the tourists who visit this country have. In addition to the extremely reasonable charges, those taxi services offer all passengers safety and the required quality of travel. They always protect the reputation of this precious country and the people. They never harm any tourist like ordinary three-wheeler driver thugs do. This is why those reputed taxi services are essential for all Airports, Railway Stations and Bus Stands in the country. Ordinary people should be given priority and not a handful of three-wheeler mafia members who are waiting for prey like the hawks. The ordinary people should be rescued from the clutches of these two legged beasts. Those are not the only stories which prove again and again how selfish the Sri Lankan people are and how they put themselves before the country. Bakers are another set of individuals who put themselves before the country. They do not care whether the innocent poor people can afford their bakery products or not, they charge as much as possible from people for their bakery products. It is the very same with all the other traders who sell various goods and consumer items to the people. The latest trend is selling cancerous food to the people after adding various substances which directly cause cancer and all the other health issues. Last week the media reported how a ten-year-old schoolgirl who has not even attained puberty yet been gang raped and burnt with cigarette butts. There is no use of explaining and writing the same old facts, figures, advice, the places where help can be obtained etc. because it seems some Sri Lankan parents had given birth to their children by accident and now they keep them because they cannot kill them or there is no way to get rid of them. Anyway many Sri Lankan fathers abandon their family after the birth of a permanently disabled child. The current law of the country does not allow aborting a fetus with birth defects. This is a vicious circle that drags the Sri Lankan people backward towards misery. Only a handful of parents have understood that there are two legged beasts out there everywhere including homes they live. We cannot expect mercy from two legged beasts. Some of them will go into prison, enjoy a fully paid vacation at the cost of taxpayers, come back and rape another child. This is what has been happening in this country during the past several decades. The media never publishes the punishments given to the culprits. The Judiciary is highly admirable because people of this country can place their hopes on the Judiciary. This was proved gain last week when bail was not granted for the individual who is alleged to have made fun out of the childhood of the Buddha and slang mud on Buddhism. Because of this, now people of this country have realized that they cannot sling mud on various religions and get away with it. Rejecting the bail application the Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage delivered a historical judgement. At this moment, this country needs individuals, groups and organisations which always put the country before self. Without that Sri Lanka will never be able to walk forward passing this financial crisis. Unfortunately waiting for Sri Lankans to change is similar to waiting for flight at the harbour!
