 * Hours after Mr. Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken made a
high-stakes visit to Kyiv, Russian missiles struck railway stations across
   Ukraine. Here’s the latest.

UKRAINIANS, YOUNG AND OLD, FLEEING WAR

BY LYNSEY ADDARIO, PHOTOGRAPHER

FROM ZAPORIZHZHIA, UKRAINE

For three days, I watched the enormous flow of Ukrainians fleeing violence in
Mariupol and elsewhere.

On Thursday, I met Yulya, 24, and her son, Yaroslav, 2, who fled Melitopol. They
are safer here in Zaporizhzhia, a town under Ukrainian control.

Zlata, 8, and Arena Boiko, 18, are sisters who reunited after fleeing the town
of Berdiansk.

Maryana, 16, arrived on a bus. Some have made multiple attempts to get out of
occupied territories, and each time they were turned back.

Varta, 81, traveled for four days from Mariupol.

Timophey, 11, and his family would have left sooner, but bridges near their home
were destroyed or rigged with mines.

There was a stream of packed cars and buses arriving during my time here.

REACTION ON TWITTER »
Governor Ron DeSantisRepublican of Florida
"@elonmusk’s offer to buy Twitter is a good deal for shareholders and raises the
prospect that the platform will be a place where free speech can thrive, not a
tool for narrative enforcement."
Robert ReichFormer secretary of labor
“When billionaires like Elon Musk justify their motives by using ‘freedom,’
beware. What they actually seek is freedom from accountability.”
Senator Ted CruzRepublican of Texas
"Is Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter a good thing? 'Yes' or 'No, I hate free
speech.' ”
Rep. Pramila JayapalDemocrat of Washington state
“Tax the rich. It’s absurd that one person can afford to buy Twitter for more
than $40 billion while working families across this country have to choose every
day between buying groceries or their prescription drugs.”
Senator Elizabeth WarrenDemocrat of Massachusetts
"This deal is dangerous for our democracy. Billionaires like Elon Musk play by a
different set of rules than everyone else, accumulating power for their own
gain. We need a wealth tax and strong rules to hold Big Tech accountable."
