The 2Africa cable system will be terminated at Djibouti Telecom's new cable landing station. TELSTRA AND CONVERGE ESTABLISH JOINT VENTURE IN THE PHILIPPINES Details Winston Qiu Capacity Watch 17 May 2022 Telstra announced the expansion of its business and service in the Philippines with the launch of a new Point of Presence (PoP) in Pasig City, and the establishment of a new joint venture with Converge Information Communications and Technology Solutions Inc. (Converge), Telstra Converge Inc.(TCI). BW DIGITAL COMPLETES ACQUISITION OF HAWAIKI CABLE Details Winston Qiu Hawaiki Cable 16 May 2022 BW Digital Pte. Ltd. (BW Digital), an affiliate of BW Group Limited, announced today the formal completion of its acquisition of 100 percent of the shares of Hawaiki Submarine Cable Limited Partnership and International Connectivity Services Limited. The transaction was subject to applicable regulatory filings and approvals, which have now all been received, including transfer of control granted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the United States. CINTURION TO LAND TEAS CABLE AT LIGHTSTORM'S OPEN CLS IN INDIA Details Winston Qiu TEAS 14 May 2022 Cinturion Corp Ltd. (Cinturion) announced Thursday that it has reached an agreement with Lightstorm as its landing partner in India. As part of the agreement, Cinturion’s TEAS (Trans Europe Asia System) will be hosted by Lightstorm to strengthen connectivity between India, the Middle East and Europe. Lightstorm will use its carrier-neutral and open Cable Landing Station (CLS) to herald a new era in the landing of submarine cable systems in India. SEA-H2X CONSORTIUM ANNOUNCES CONTRACT IN FORCE Details Winston Qiu SEA-H2X 12 May 2022 The SEA-H2X Consortium, comprised of China Mobile International Limited (CMI), China Unicom Global (CUG) , Converge Information and Communications Technology Solutions, Inc. (Converge) and PPTEL SEA H2X Sdn. Bhd (PPTEL SEA-H2X), officially announced and reaffirmed today their partnership to construct and operate the South East Asia Hainan - Hong Kong Express Cable System (SEA-H2X), a new submarine cable system that will connect Hong Kong SAR China, Hainan China, Philippines, Thailand, East Malaysia and Singapore, with options to extend to Vietnam, Cambodia, West Malaysia and Indonesia. AAE-1 TO UPGRADE WITH INFINERA’S ICE6 FOR OVER 100TBPS SYSTEM CAPACITY Details Winston Qiu AAE-1 12 May 2022 Infinera announced Tuesday that the Asia-Africa-Europe-1 (AAE-1) Consortium selected Infinera’s ICE6 coherent 800G solution to increase its submarine network capacity and provide diverse, resilient connectivity across European, Asian, African, and Middle Eastern markets. AAE-1’s submarine upgrade will more than double the current capacity, providing in excess of 100 Tbps, resulting in the largest-scale submarine upgrade in history. SOUTHERN CROSS NEXT GRANTS PROVISIONAL ACCEPTANCE Details Winston Qiu Southern Cross NEXT 10 May 2022 The Southern Cross NEXT submarine cable project has been granted Provisional Acceptance, the system owner Southern Cross Cable Limited (Southern Cross), the system supplier Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) and the project consulting firm Pioneer Consulting jointly announced Monday. The Southern Cross NEXT cable system will be the largest and lowest-latency route connecting Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, to initiate commericial service on July 7th, 2022. OPTUS LAUNCHES PRE-ORDER FOR SERVICES ON SOUTHERN CROSS NEXT CABLE Details Winston Qiu Southern Cross NEXT 04 May 2022 Optus announced in April to accept pre-order for capacity on the Southern Cross NEXT (SX NEXT) submarine cable. The existing Southern Cross (SX) cable used by telco providers and wholesalers today, is nearing end of life (currently expected in 2030). SX NEXT will provide continuity of capacity for Optus Wholesale customers for the next 20-30 years. OMAN AUSTRALIA CABLE (OAC) COMPLETES FINAL LANDING IN OMAN Details Winston Qiu OAC 04 May 2022 The final cable landing for the Oman Australia Cable (OAC) was completed in Barka, Oman in late April, marking a major milestone for the project. Once live, OAC is set to become the only undersea cable to avoid the notorious Malacca Straits and is Australia’s first express undersea cable to EMEA, improving connectivity and resiliency between the regions. BSCCL RAISES INVESTMENT IN SEA-ME-WE 6 TO US$100 MILLION Details Winston Qiu SEA-ME-WE 6 22 April 2022 According to The Finanicial Express, the English newspaper in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited (BSCCL) board has decided to invest Tk 1.73 billion (equivalently US$20 million) more in the SEA-ME-WE6 submarine cable system. With the increase, BSCCL's total cost for the SEA-ME-WE 6 will be about Tk 8.70 billion (equivalently US$100 million) from the initial Tk 6.93 billion. EQUIANO SUBSEA CABLE LANDS IN LAGOS, NIGERIA Details Winston Qiu Equiano 22 April 2022 Google and cable landing partner WIOCC announced Thursday (April 21) the landing of Equiano subsea cable in Lagos, Nigeria. Google's Equiano cable will land directly into the OADC Lagos data centre. VIETTEL LANDS ASIA DIRECT CABLE (ADC) IN VIETNAM Details Winston Qiu ADC 21 April 2022 According the Viet Nam News, the Military Industry-Telecoms Group (Viettel) officially announced the landing of ADC (Asia Direct Cable) international subsea cable in Quy Nhơn City, Bình Định Province on Tuesday (April 19). 2AFRICA SUBSEA CABLE ACHIEVES FIRST LANDING IN GENOA, ITALY Details Winston Qiu 2Africa 16 April 2022 2Africa consortium announced Thursday the first landing of the 2Africa cable in Genoa, Italy. Vodafone is the 2Africa landing party in Genoa and lands the 2Africa cable directly into a newly built data center Equinix GN1. The landing sets the tone for more landings in the coming months as the cable is extended to a total of 46 locations by the completion of the project in 2024. GOOGLE ANNOUNCES TOPAZ SUBSEA CABLE CONNECTING CANADA AND JAPAN Details Winston Qiu Topaz 07 April 2022 Google announced Wednesday its new subsea cable, Topaz, the first-ever fiber cable to connect Canada and Asia, and the first trans-Pacific fiber cable to land on the West Coast of Canada, connecting Vancouver to Japan. The Topaz cable system is expect to be ready for service in 2023. ZAIN TO BUILD J2M CABLE SYSTEM LINKING JEDDAH TO MARSEILLE Details Winston Qiu J2M 05 April 2022 Zain Group announces that its wholly owned subsidiary Zain Global Connect (ZGC) is connecting the Middle East with Europe through the Jeddah to Marseille (J2M ) submarine cable system. The J2M cable system will be a subsystem of the PEACE cable system, and Zain Saudi Arabia will act as the cable landing party in Jeddah, Suadi Arabia. PCCW GLOBAL DEPLOYS 25TBPS PER FIBER PAIR ON PEACE CABLE SYSTEM WITH INFINERA’S SOLUTIONS Details Winston Qiu PEACE 31 March 2022 Infinera and PCCW Global announced on Tuesday the completion of a significant deployment on the PEACE cable system between Marseille (France), Yeroskipou (Cyprus) and Abu Talat. Utilizing Infinera’s ICE technology, PCCW Global now offers network operators the ability to significantly increase capacity per fiber pair up to 25Tbps on these critical Middle East and Mediterranean fiber routes.
