A little more than 70 years ago, U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower gave his
famous Atoms for Peace speech before the United Nations General Assembly. He
urged the international community to use nuclear fission to improve the planet
rather than to fuel more destructive wars. The United States, he pledged, would
“find the way by which the miraculous inventiveness of man shall not be
dedicated to his death, but consecrated to his life.”

At the time, there was cause for both hope and concern. When Eisenhower took to
the podium on December 8, 1953, experts already understood the enormous
potential of atomic science,
