CODE OF MEDICAL ETHICS

Find Ethics Guidance

The American Medical Association was founded in part to establish the world's
first national code of medical ethics. The Code is widely recognized as the most
comprehensive ethics guide for physicians. Opinions in the Code address issues
and challenges confronting the medical profession and represent AMA policy.

Promoting adherence to the professional standards promulgated in the Code is
essential to preserving patient trust and public confidence in the medical
profession.

LEARNING CENTER

Education from the AMA Code of Medical Ethics offers continuing medical
education and other learning opportunities for medical students and physicians
who strive to practice ethically. Topic filters allow learners to select
educational offerings that meet their individual needs.

About

IMPORTANCE OF THE CODE

In May 1847, the nascent American Medical Association took what has been
described as a revolutionary action by promulgating standards of ethical conduct
for physicians, distinct from personal virtue or morality. Much has changed
since its creation and to guide physicians in the face of continuing
breakthroughs in science and changing conditions of practice, the Code must be a
living document.

About

COUNCIL ON ETHICAL & JUDICIAL AFFAIRS

Composed of seven physicians with ethics as well as clinical expertise, one
resident physician and one medical student, the Council on Ethical and Judicial
Affairs is responsible for maintaining and updating the AMA Code of Medical
Ethics and promoting adherence to the standards of professional ethics set out
in the Code.
