AI was Identified as one of the four Grand Challenges in the government’s 2017 Industrial Strategy White Paper, and a nearly £1 billion AI sector investment deal was announced in 2018. Between 2014-201 the government has invested more than £2.3 billion into the AI sector, and governmental investment in Research and Development is expected to grow to 2.4% of GDP by 2027. This has resulted in numerous successes; in 2019 the UK government ranked second globally in terms of AI readiness as well as ranking third in the world for private investment into AI companies in 2020, and third in the world for AI publication citations per capita. The expected benefits from AI for the UK include adding £630bn to the UK economy by 2035, more than 1.3 million UK business will use AI by 2040 and it has been estimated that the AI sector could grow the UK economy by 10.3% by 2030. This event will examine the potential offered by AI technology including increased efficiency, speed, and accuracy and how this can be used to transform the public sector to provide better governmental results to citizens.
